Folder File System

I've been shooting with an XT for almost a year. I recently read posts regarding the 20D and the 30D, and there is a fair amount of discussion regarding the available folders. Pardon my ignorance, but I really have no idea what function the folders have.

Obviously, it is related to a file system. I take all of my shots and download them to my computer in a specail photo section. I use Zoombrowser to send them to an appropriately named folder, even if the folder is just a shooting date. I then use Adobe Elements' Organizer to help me find photos. So, why should I, or anyone pay too much attention to the in camera filing system?

I'd like to hear from anyone who uses the camera filing system, and how they use it.

The folder system, is primarily for the camera's use, not the user. It's actually an ISO standard that's been adopted by all major camera manufacturers.

Wikipedia has a decent explanation of how the file system is laid out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DCIM (external link)

Not ignorance: rather, better informed. There is no need to ever see the folder structures in the camera if appropriate download/browser software is used, as you say.

More, I agree that the file name is not that relevant - use a cataloguing program to find what you want.

I, too would like to know of benefits of working with the DCIM file system.

But for those of us who prefer to upload the image files manually instead of relying on some software to do it, if there are multiple folders created for every 100 files created, it can get to be a pain uploading those file when you have to go into each folder individually to do it. Chances of missing a file or two here and there are greater.

The 1D series cameras stored 9999 files in a folder so it was easier to handle those with only one folder to worry about most of the time. With the 30D handing files the same way, it'll be just as hassle-free manually managing the files on that camera as well.
