I primarily shoot birds and my main body is the 7D used with the 400 f/5.6L. I am thinking of picking up a 7D mk2. So, my main concern is with all things being equal, will upgrading to the mk 2 with my 400 f/5.6L produce for me shots with a noticeably improved IQ over the 7D and the 400 f/5.6L?

I would love to see your bird images taken with the 7D mk2 and the 400 f/5.6L Thank you.

It is noticeable in the noise department but not by much. Your keeper rate will most likely increase once you get used to the new AF system.

Can't help on the photos though.

Check out posts by edmidlifecrisis. He shoots birds and has a 7d2 and a 400F5.6. You could examine his shots and see what you think. He posts very nice images with that combo.

I have that combo, and use it mainly for fast flying ducks,in-flight.The mk11 seems to better at acquisition, and tracking, and of course a bit faster.Doesn,t seem to be much better at noise, with high ISO.
For pics, check out my waterfowl folder on flikr, and go to page 2.the longtailed ducks were captured with this combo.

Thanks all for the tips and info. I bought the Mk II yesterday and I am anxious to see how it performs.

I bought the 7D2 three weeks ago after using my trusty 7D for five years. I thought that the list of features on my 7D was impressive, but the mark 2 is a quantum leap above. The high ISO noise is greatly improved. At low ISO it is about the same. What impresses me is the greatly improved AF that works well even in much lower light. There are so many options that can be customized that it may take quite a while to decide what best suits my purpose ... actually, I'll probably still mainly use center spot AF. The auto tracking AF with all 65 points is quite impressive. I am also very impressed with the auto exposure. AWB seems as good as I could want for outdoor shooting. I also use a EF400 f/5.6L lens and I couldn't ask for anything sharper. I haven't tried it with my extenders yet on this body.

I suppose that all of the above adds up to a higher yield of keepers which translates into better IQ from that perspective.

I haven't played with live view yet, but it is the best way to get high quality shots when using a supertelephoto lens and a slow shutter.

The only downside to this body is how fast it drains the battery. Of course, part of that is my fault because I've been fiddling with all of the features and looking at the rear screen. I've also been playing with the GPS ... NICE TOY. The compass is also a nice toy. With all that, I won't have to worry about getting lost. My old 7D has a battery grip and I can see that it is something that I will seriously need for my mark 2.
