instagram is simple to use if you have a smart phone or tablet...so it's fine for "real photographers" not everything has to be posted right away, don't know why people are saying that...post images a day later, two weeks later, whatever...but at the end of the day, yeah you need a tablet, or smart phone, because it is an app

i'd venture to guess that 99.99% of photographers have a smart phone or tablet...unfortunately you're in that small percentage that doesn't

i just looked at the workarounds...doesn't seem like you need a smart phone for those...what's wrong with them?

What workarounds might these be?
Every workaround that has been suggested on this thread - including the workaround that you mentioned in post #2, requires uploading to a smartphone:

.....if i'm not importing directly from my 70D to my phone, i'll upload to either dropbox, or flickr, and then save it on the phone from there...

Connect your phone to your PC via usb cable, drag and drop photos. Then upload to IG.

flowrider wrote in post #17856884 (external link)
Save to Dropbox folder, go to Dropbox on phone, export to device, post to Instagram

Dan Marchant wrote in post #17857460 (external link)
On my PC I use Lightroom to export an image to an "Instagram" folder in Dropbox.
Pull up Instagram on your phone and tap the icon to add a photo (middle one),

I don't think there is a way to post images without a capable phone.

If photos are on my computer I dropbox them and pick them up on my phone.
otherwise, wifi to phone from my 6D is awesome for posting from events just minutes after pics are taken.

"While there are services like Grambler, it is not recommended to use them. Lately, Instagram has been very strict with third party apps and there are many reports of accounts getting shut down when these third party apps are used. The last thing anyone wants is get their account taken away. This leaves no choice other than getting the photo from a PC to a cell phone in the most efficient way."

Andre, If you could let us know what workarounds do not require the use of a smartphone, that would be very helpful - then I would be able to get an instagram account!

Ok, so I saw that in that list of workarounds there were two that work with Apple operating systems.
One of those only lets you upload photos, and does not allow you to do anything else on instagram (such as set up an account).

So that left one viable workaround, which is Blue Stacks.
It took 36 minutes for the Blue Stacks installer to upload onto my computer.......OUCH!

Anyway, so, after much waiting, I installed Blue Stacks.
And I searched Blue Stacks for Instagram, which I promptly found.
So I click on Instagram to install it, and I get a page saying that I have to sign in to a Google account in order to proceed.
Why the heck does Google need to be involved?
The next screen (after signing in to Google) asks me to sign in to Google Play.
Why?
What the freaking heck is Google Play?
I don't want Google to play anything - I just want Instagram.
At this point my blood is boiling over with frustration.
I am yelling at Blue Stack, "Just give me what I want and give it to me now!!!"
I am going to quit the whole thing if Blue Stack doesn't give me Instagram in, like, the next 60 seconds.

And you asked what was wrong with the workarounds........sheesh!!!

since google makes the android operating system they can require you to have an account. They didn't make the operating system for altruistic reasons, they made it to harvest user data.

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.
It says to try it again, and so I did try it again.
Of course, it didn't work the second time, either.....these things never do.

Why does it seem that any time I try to do anything on a computer - anything at all* - this is, unfailingly, the end result.
And people ask why I don't use PhotoShop!
Why does technology seem to work for everybody else in the civilized world, and yet it never works for me?
Was everyone else just born with some kind of aptitude for this stuff, or did you all have to, like, go to school for it or something?
People make it all seem so easy, yet just trying to get something very common like Instagram has me all sick inside and ready to hurl my computer thru my picture window.

*That is, anything that involves the installation of new software.

Tom, this isn't a luddite problem. You're just feeling the pain from instagram's deliberate roadblock. Can you at least borrow someone else's tablet or smartphone to create an account and upload a few images to test it out? With a cheap second-hand tablet located near a wifi spot, you should be able to upload images.

I'm not really understanding what you mean when you say, "tablet".
Is that like an iPad?

By the way, you have one of the coolest titles that the TF ever handed out!

Yes, email image files to yourself or load them to dropbox, then use an ipad or other tablet with wifi to access those images for use with the instagram app.

good call pinebomb.

Ok, good.
Then we may be getting somewhere.

With a tablet, or an iPad, can those be hooked up to a big monitor, so that I can see things properly?
And can they be hooked up to a regular full-size keypad, so that I can type things properly?

My hope would be that you can plug USB cables into these tablets and then plug the other ends of the cables into a monitor and a keypad.

My friend has an iPad, and while it works ok for him, I find it very difficult that the keys are not as big as what I am accustomed to with my desktop.
Also, it is really hard to fully evaluate and edit photos on such tiny little screens.

Would Instagram think that the iPad, or the tablet, is a mobile device?

I don't use ipads. I think there are some issues with transferring files via cables, but it's still possible. I think you'd be better off using a tablet with the dropbox and instagram apps. You can do all the image editing as you are accustomed to on your desktop. Then from your desktop place the files into your dropbox directory. After that you can navigate to your dropbox from any other device that has an internet connection.

yes, with something like this: http://eshop.macsales.com …O3-3JOIm8sCFYE8gQod7tQAlQ (external link)

My hope would be that you can plug USB cables into these tablets and then plug the other ends of the cables into a monitor and a keypad.

you probably want a bluetooth keyboard. http://eshop.macsales.com/search/bluetooth+keyboard (external link)
there are all kinds of things you can plug into the iPad port.

My friend has an iPad, and while it works ok for him, I find it very difficult that the keys are not as big as what I am accustomed to with my desktop.

a bluetooth keyboard will work fine, but keep in mind that the interface is made for touch. This will impact your wanting to put the screen image on a TV or monitor because you will still need to use the tablet for navigating around the device.

Also, it is really hard to fully evaluate and edit photos on such tiny little screens.

I do it on my tiny iPhone. The iPad screens are very high resolution but i don't think there is any calibration software for them. You can buy card readers and edit JPG, but RAW is not supported, last time i checked ... last summer. You can even get Lightroom and I think a version of Photoshop.

Would Instagram think that the iPad, or the tablet, is a mobile device?

yes. the instagram app is fully supported on the iPad, and I assume android tablets.

As i said before, i pull low res pics from my camera to iPhone via wifi and make edits on them when at an event and needing to post something quickly to social media, but there is no substitute for editing on a proper computer and then moving them to the iPad/iPhone for posting to instagram.

it'd be better to do all the editing as you would normally...then just put that image into instagram...you wouldn't be typing a ton, so i'm not sure you would need to attach a keyboard

do you have wifi in your home?

if so you can see if someone has an old iphone, and if it's no longer functioning you can still use it to connect to wifi, and upload to instagram as you would a smartphone

i'd say a lot of people have old iphone 4's and such just lying around after upgrading
