I have a new Pioneer BDR-S09XLT. Internal Blu Ray drive.
With no ODD bay on the new Phanteks case, obviously I can't connect the header cable to it. (I think that is what you normally do ? )

But, Will it work if I just connect one Sata 6gb/s data cable and one Sata power cable to it?
Apologies for such a basic question, Am I correct that if I just let it self install with Windows 10, then it will just work and allow me to read DVDs to get my software loaded.
I bought Windows 10 on a USB stick, so will load the OS from that.

The case has a sort of shelf over the power supply, as it has no 5.25" bays, I Thought I would just stick it on the shelf with double sided tape - would that work?. Not ideal, but I will only use it if I have a problem, and need to load software like MS Office and Photshop.

Ideally I would like to find a single 5.25" chassis compartment thing, that I could bolt to the case and slide the Blu Ray drive into it.
But I have looked everywhere, and all I can find is enclosures, that fit into a 5.25 bay and say convert that chamber into a 3.5 or 2.5" drive holder.
Any ideas where I could find one and until then could I just stick it to the chassis?

Not ideal, but I suppose you could just plug it in and use it when/if you need it as a bare drive. Some of the 5.25"-3.5" adapters seem like all you'd need to do is remove the faceplate and bend down a couple of pieces of metal and it would work.

I converted to an iMac with no internal options at all, so my blu-ray drive is now in an external enclosure connected by USB 3.0, since I already had the drive in a PC the iMac replaced. They're pretty cheap these days, I think mine was only around $40.

should have bought a mac.

:P

seriously though, you bought a case with no place to put your drink holder?

Would work if you just connect it and set it somewhere, but its not what i would do.. I'd get an external enclosure for it or consider simply buying a slimline external blu-ray

something like this for option one

Or option 2 is something like this

or this

if you are only going to use it in an emergency, just take the tower apart and plug in the regular ribbon cable with the drive sitting on the desk … do your work, shut down, unplug, and stick the drive back in the box.

if the cable is too short just put a case of beer beside the tower to support the bare drive.

I have the Vantec enclosure mentioned above and it works great.

Since you're apparently on a really low budget for doing this (or want to do it as cheaply as possible, which I understand) then I'd probably leave some cables hooked up inside the case, neatly bundled and out of the way, and just plug in the drive and reboot when I needed it. If it's the same case that I found when I googled, then it looks like it has a door on the side for quick access. That should work well enough for an occasional reinstall. The external USB enclosure has the advantage of being hot swappable, but if it's just for emergency use that's not really much of an issue.

Really? of all the threads you post up of your potential builds and THIS is where you say too expensive?

Lol. This is the first thought that came to my mind, too. Pondering liquid cooling, quad-core i7s, dozens of GBs of memory, TBs of flash storage, complete overkill graphics engines, but he draws the line at a $45 enclosure.

Hmm I can see your point to some extent. Personally I see a huge difference in spending on something I will use a lot, and not wanting to waste money on something I hopefully will only use [hopefully] very, very infrequently.
I've only reloaded this laptop 2x in 4 years. And one of those occaisions was due to horrible Sony bloatware.

Call me mean, call me stupid ... but I would say it was prudent. They have a great deal on the memory atm. Personally I would rather not waste money on unused items. If I do that 3.5 times I could afford another 32GB of Ram and use it every day as a scratch disc. LOL
Or even once, buy another 1 TB WD HHD fir backing up, and try and move away from messy external USB drives, which even the USB 3.0 ones seem dreadfully slow.

As I said before, I had 2 failures in a row using USB3.0 caddys for 3.5" drives. I chose the ones that had additional power sockets to put in another USB port. And both screwed up!
Crashed and one induced a BSOD.

Yep I am on a low budget for this element - and the Case has a nice swing door [allegedly] hence my idea of just leaving it connected inside. In the event a reload is needed. I would Just open the door and pop the dvd in.

My thoughts were if they seem to make 100's of 3.5 to 2.5 converter caddys etc., it would be worth paying say £10 to encase it. But no cheap 5.25" ones seem available.
Maybe I will come across a case that has a removable 5.25" drive bay and bolt that it. Just not seen one and Phanteks only do 3.5 " drive chassis bays.

Spends $2500+ on a PC... thinks a $40 drive bay is "too expensive"

I'm confused, why is it that you think you'll need your optical drive? Didn't you say you bought your OS as an ISO file on a USB drive?

Why didn't you pick a case with a drive bay on it if this was something you thought you'd need?

Your idea of leaving it resting and connected inside the case will work, it's just silly and seems rather inconveneint.

Well maybe my frugality on things I will hardly ever need, is the reason I can spend £1900 on a pc. :)
Yes the OS Comes on a USB stick, but my Office is DVD, my Photoshop is DVD ( not going the subscription route on that ) and Portraiture is on a DVD.
As for inconvenient I may use it once in 2 years.
And the case is perfect in every other respect with solid 3mm aluminium panels that I like, and takes 140mm fans - and bluntly the only other case I preferred was 3x the price so at £119 Thought that would be great.
