Lots of cool photos popping up with vapers putting out all the smoke, like so:

Thing is, I don't have a vape nor do I vape... but I really want to add some smoke to my photos. Anyone have any ideas for an alternative/something portable that could generate this sort of smoke effect?

A fog machine with a long hose or tube attached to the output might work. You could then aim the hose where you want, like in the picture you posted behind the person where it would look like it is coming out of her mouth. I don't know if you can really control the fog burst or not on the machines though.

That looks like pulled cotton to me. I dont think there is anyway that front lit vapor would cause a shadow that deep or show that much texture.

I don't know about that, you can get some pretty spectacular effects from dense areas of water vapour, just look at the various Cumulus type cloud formations. They can even cast some pretty defined shadows, with a separation of up to about 5000 feet. Given that the posted image seems to be lit by direct flash I'm quite sure it is indeed a cloud of vapour at a close distance to the background.

The other thing about clouds of vapour is that they tend to be fractal in nature, so no matter what scale you look at them from the detail tends to remain constant looking.

How about a cigarette...select the smoke and drop it in your image.

I'm talking about the image posted, not a a cloud.

You can buy a disposable e cigarette at any convenience store for around $10.. That would be the easiest and cheapest method to tinker with faux smoke. If you want the effect of the second photo you need to backlight the vapor.

Or...an incense stick.
