So I'm looking for a large durable softbox for location work. I've had a phottix Luna Octa, which I loved. I later ordered another phottix square softbox. I used the latter no more than 3 times, never dropped, never abused and Fiberglas rods snapped - and the Luna Octa broke shortly thereafter. If it were more durable, it would be ideal, but both of them have broken without abuse or falling over which I find unacceptable. I want something 40" or larger, that won't break with basic use and is portable and quick to assemble.

My cheetah boxes are the best I've found so far but I want something larger and hopefully umbrella style so I can carry it in my lightstand bag. These will be used for individual portraits with bare bulbs and possibly the new Godox 600 strobe - so I need Bowens mount.

Im willing to spend money but also don't care if it's an off brand or knock off if it fits the bill.

I have a 50 x 50 portable softbox I purchased from Cheetah Stands that I use with my Cheetah lights. It folds up like an umbrella and would easily fit in a light stand bag.

I have about 6 Chimera's, from 12x12 mini's and strips through the X-Large 54 X 72 (three head) banks that I use on location. Some go back to the 80's. I don't know if current models are constructed the same way, but mine have held up incredibly well. I've never broken an aluminum rod. I brought a few home 2 years ago as the front panels had yellowed over time. Set them up in the sun, sprayed them down with bleach and a few hours later hosed them off. Good as new.

My answer for most photography questions: "it depends...'

Chimera is good, but one of my first softboxes where photoflex medium SB and it's proven to hold up as well as the chimera boxes i owned. Depending on the speedring it can be more/less work to set up. I rarely use it these days as i have the Elinchrom Rotalux series, which is lighter and faster to setup.

I pick Chimera for SBs and, more importantly, for their quick-release speed rings: the rods are individually hinged, and you just swing them into position until they lock. Setup/breakdown is fast and safe. When collapsed, the SB can stand upright on its own and can be transported like an umbrella. Through the 3'x4' (Medium) size, the rods are steel, so no chance of snapping.

Canon, Nikon, Contax, Leica, Sony, Profoto.

The phottix isn't really comparable to any of the brands mentioned here.

Here is a 53" Octa that is fast to setup and folds down quite nicely.

Get this speedring to mount them on your Bowens,
