I have a friend of mine looking for a point and shoot camera. He is a hunter and will be taking duck/fishing pictures mostly. He is looking for a lens that gives you a little farther focal length while keeping a good quality picture. . Would like to stay under $400. He is NOT worried about it being compact.

Thanks!

I love my G15. My daughter feels the same about her S110. If he needs more zoom, the SX50 (60?)HS has a nice reputation.

Shots are Wrigley field with G15. Wide, then tele from the same seat, as shot. No cropping on either.

The G15 has 5x optical zoom. (Beyond that, it has digital zoom, which I found worthless and turned off.) Your friend won't get such fine detail on animals at a distance as he would with a genuine long lens. If he isn't fussy about detail, a camera in Canon's G series may do the job.

G15 for compact size or SX50 for max zoom (both bargain priced now), or Panasonic FZ1000 if he wants to pay more and carry a bit more size and have far more capability to take really good quality photos and video. I have, and can recommend, all three.

What do you recommend for more detail?

It'd have to be a DSLR with a big, expensive lens. There are many lenses to choose from. Most people at POTN know more about those than I do.

So the SX50 has a better zoom then the G15?

Is there a better place to post this question on the forum?

I think you chose a good place the first time.

The SX50 goes from 24mm to 1200mm all with optics.
The G15 goes from 28mm to 135mm with optics. After that it is digital zoom, which is quite worthless.

The G15 has a larger sensor and is packed in a pocketable body. The SX50 is a mini-SLR type bridge camera. I prefer the pocketable G15. If I have to carry something, it may as well be a 6D.

So the zoom is def better on the SX50? He would like that when taking pics of ducks in the marsh.. BUT he will have to deal with a bigger camera. Otherwise they are pretty equal with image quality?

I think he would like the pocketable G15 as he would be hauling it in his hunting and fishing boats.
really it sounds like he can't

I did see they have a SX50 at a pretty good price

The G16 is cheaper then the G15?

There are smaller SX cameras that still have quite good reach. For instance, the SX-710 is 4.44 x 2.59 x 1.37 in. / 112.7 x 65.8 x 34.8mm and has a longest reach equivalent to a 750 mm lens on a FF 35 mm body.

That is a fantastic price on the SX50. It is out of stock.

Unfortunately, everything in photography is a compromise. The G15 is wholly insufficient for any wildlife more than about 40' away. The 1DX and 800mm f/5.6 will reach out and touch lots of critters... if you want to spend $16,000 and pay someone to carry it around for you.

Maybe something like an SL1 and an 18-55/55-250 combination would fill the bill? Try the 'for sale' forum here on POTN.

There are truly compact superzoom cams out there.

The Panasonic TZ70 (external link) has an equivalent 24-720mm zoom in a body that's a similar size to a Canon G.

There are other options from Canon and Sony. (external link)
