What would peeps say the difference between these two in IQ etc be? as they have the same eqv focal length of 400mm.

Regards

An interesting question, because I have the FZ1000 and also a 60D with the 55-250STM which might be considered comparable to the 7D Mk1 in IQ.

So when I get time in the next few days I'll do some simple tests using a few different ISO settings but at the same 5.6 aperture since that is the widest on the 55-250 at max zoom.

What do YOU guess the results will show?

It will be interesting to see the comparison results as i use my current 7d/55-250 STM for aviation photography of airways aircraft.

Likely going to find much less ability to crop to a satisfactory image with the Panny. While they have similar pixel numbers, the Panny's sensor is roughly half the size, meaning less actual data/detail captured per pixel plus higher signal/noise ratio. I'm also not so clear here, but, I don't believe that the p&s cameras magnify the subject at equivalent sizes to a similarly spec'ed ilc.

So, you'll likely get pleasing images of anything that you can fill the frame with, at time of shooting, but find that the image falls apart rapidly, if trying to crop to anything small in the initial frame.

Interesting results so far - the Panasonic walks away with both IQ and AWB when shooting JPG!:-)

The lighting was a tough challenge (fluorescent) but the whites on the FZ1000 showed far better.

The images were all imported into LR and exported without any corrections apart from cropping. I normally always shoot RAW and expect the results will show much the same when RAW is optimized from each camera in LR.

All were shot at f/5.6, full zoom from the same distance, IS off, on tripod. The following are all 100% crops:

And here are the results of processing ISO 3200 RAW files from each camera. In LR The 60D needed the exposure brightening a little (it wasn't the WB that was off in the previous JPEGS, it was the exposure). I applied 25% sharpening and 50% luminance NR to each, then exported to JPEGs and cropped to these 100% images in PSP.

What do you think? As far as I can see they're both pretty good for 3200, although one could play around with each and tweak to improve.

The bottom line for me is that considering smaller size, less weight, advanced menu options and other features, the clear winner is the FZ1000. Wanna buy a 60D, anyone?;-)a

Both quite surprised and pleased by the results so far; it's very interesting. What focal length were you shooting on the 60D for these? It isn't included in the exif that I can find.

Also, can you post a sample of the full frame of the image so we can see what the subject looks like in the complete image?

The real interest would be cropping in heavily on something far away/relatively small in the frame.

As stated in an earlier post I was shooting at full zoom with both cameras, i.e. 250 mm on the 60D, and it is in the EXIF (I use Fxif and Firefox).

Here's the full image resized to 1024p and showing the crop area used in the comparisons. The camera wasn't quite level, as you can see. I used spot AF on both cameras to focus on the thumbtack in all the shots. I can't see that cropping any more heavily would change the results - these tests are enough for me.

Finally, just for kicks, here's a shot taken with my Canon SX50 at full zoom (1200 mm eq.) from the same distance at ISO800. I was amazed to see that it actually shows the fine "weave" of the card paper - something that can't be seen even close up with the naked eye without a magnifying glass. That's why I love the SX50 for birding!

The SX50Hs is a good cam even at max range(one of the best when group tested in 2015);-)a

Assuming you're talking about the test images I posted, they are long gone - deleted.

Bummer; would love to have seen them. But thanks for the reply anyway. Are you on Flickr? If so, check out our FZ1000 Fan Club Group. https://www.flickr.com/groups/lumix-fz1000/ (external link)
