My friend is looking for a point and shoot camera. He will be using for fishing and hunting pictures mostly. He is looking to stay under $400 and is looking for a lens that gives you a little farther focal length while keeping a good quality picture. He is NOT worried about it being compact.

. I THINK I narrowed it down to SX Series (SX50-SX60) or G Series (G15 or something).

Just wanted some feedback on these cameras and what you think would be the best fit for him. I also would like to know if it is worth the price difference going to the SX50 over the SX60?

Thanks!

Didn't you already post the same question on the "General Photography" forum and get whole slew of helpful answers?

If I got my answer would I post again? I wanted to talk to people who own the G series. Never hurts to get more help does it?

Be advised the SX 2-digit cameras are completely different than the SX 3-digit ones.

My guess about your friend is he really just wants a good point and shoot. The G-series offer the best features for the P&S type camera, but they are more complicated for newbies to cameras than most people want to deal with. Your friend sounds like he wants more reach in the zoom lens than the G15/G16 offer, and he probably has no interest in processing RAW image files. My recommendation would be something more pocketable like the Panasonic ZS50. It offers a true (though small) electronic view finder, a 30X optical zoom, and less megapixels to give a little less noise to higher ISO shots. The ZS50 fits within his $400 budget limit also.

If appears Panasonic will release the ZS60 in March to replace the ZS50. It will have 18 MP (more noise?) and a sharper resolution for the EVF, with the price around $450.

Make sure he does a little research on the Canon G3 X, or some say G3X. Don't shoot me. Please. I know it is seriously more camera than your original post targets, and more than the budget you stated, but the camera I was thinking about when I read your post. Lots of zoom. Really good pictures. Not compact. He needs to know it exists. You never know. And the G15/G16 will not have enough zoom to keep him happy.

Hi Mamaof2,

I have a SX10 and a G15, You said this is for fishing and hunting. For fishing I'm assuming the photos will be close by and would not need a long reaching lens. for hunting it depends on what his shots will be taking, is he looking to take photos of the prize (after shooting ) = SX 60 or of wildlife in there natural setting ( Deer in the distance hiding in the woods ) = G series.
