Looks as if I am coming to New York for a week in October. We'll be based in Midtown, will be visiting 42nd Street, Central Park, Statue of Liberty, loads more touristy things that I haven't worked out yet.

Thinking of using something like a 14-40mm as my main walkabout lens on a 5DMkII, along with a G7X for when I don't want to carry that much weight.

So... am I likely to survive wandering around for a week with the 5D over my shoulder, or am I likely to have someone knock me over and run off with it?

I think you'll find NYC extremely safe. In any case it isn't a place you're going to stand out by carrying a camera or two. You'll fit right in.

...you have a higher chance of having your pockets picked at those "tourists" area compared to other boroughs.

a big target are those people walking around the city with their backpacks worn on the front!!!

avoid those characters you see everywhere in times square!!!

I carried my 5D3 through NYC, up the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, top of the Rock & everywhere else including Times Square. I was there a week & not one bit of trouble. Have fun, it is a great city to go play in but too noisy for me to live there.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.
