This location was a storefront I was thinking about renting. I was worried about headroom problems so I asked if I could be a test shoot. That shot was with just the beautful window light that the space had. I tried some stuff with strobe and unbrella and I could get it just barely high enough for a fill length of this model who is not particularly tall. Its a shame about the ceiling bc the window light is awesome.

Comments welcome about the images but also looking for advice about studio spaces. The ceiling was about 8 feet.

Model: Jaycee

Also 1000th post!

I could use a studio with 8' ceilings in a pinch, but I couldn't imagine having it as a permanent or semi-permanent space.

9' would be the absolute minimum for me.

Yeah I did a few fill lengths and the light was hitting her body more then her face. The light was already touching the ceiling so I had to tilt the strobe up. I got away with it but if I had to tilt it much more (which I would have had to with a taller model) it would have given the model that bad slightly upward nose shadow.

I love the first one a lot, epecially the background and I'm not a real fan of using them but wow I'm probably gonna give it a try now.

Yea they are good for shoots like this for a clean background. The paper ones I have are unruly at 10 feet wide. I bought them from another photographer - 14 different colors and shades for $200 -

So this was my first test shot

I felt like too much light was hitting her body and not her face. After this I would have brought up the light but I couldnt so I tilted it.

What do you guys think?

I think she's wearing way too much make-up. The tones on the face and other exposed skin is too jarring.

In all of them or just this in the test shot?

I dodnt retouch the test so yea it looks the worst. In most I lightened her face up to combat that. Im gunna post a few more later so let me know if its as bad in them also.

The standing test shot does show the tan face makeup and the pale chest to exaggerate the falloff. So its likely a combination of the two.

All of them. I noticed in the first two you had posted days ago, and I was kinda lamenting it, since her natural skin tone is so much more beautiful than the 'warm' tone her face gets after the make up.

Also, I think it's normal for the face to have a darker tone as it's always exposed to sunlight and the environment; guess one more reason to tone it down on the make up.

I was looking at and contrasting the face and the neck. I didn't want to look below the second button of her blouse on that last image.

I used to shoot a naturally pale dancer, her skin was so white to be almost translucent. But she tended to pack on the tan pancake to give her face color. Most of the keepers were converted to BW simply to compensate for the hours of post required to color match.

Yea it was definitely a problem and it was made worse by the inability to have the light high enough. Maybe Ill do a bit of burning on her stomach.

Example Before and after light tilt:
