Are there any recommendations for an on camera flash for 70 D. Right now I have a Yongnou flash and am not very happy with it (YN560). It doesn't have ETTL.

Heya,

Do you want the "best" or do you just want a good functional TTL/HSS capable flash?

Yongnuo 685 is where I'd put you. ETTL, HSS, etc. Does it all for a great price. And later if you go off camera, it has a built in receiver.

Very best,

My suggestion is to try one out in a camera store if you're able to. I know the internet is ripe with "this camera doesn't work" threads, but I (and more than a few others) have had real issues with 70D and bounce ettl flash. For me, it seemed to hinge on what lens I had mounted.

Assuming your happy with your camera's ettl results, the YN685 is a winner.

took a while to find dimensions and weight for the YN685... but yes, this chinese speedlight is fully spec'd

Dimensions 8.27 in x 3.03 in x 2.64 in (21 cm x 7.7 cm x 6.7 cm)
Weight 15.03 oz (426 g)

I have the Canon 320EX which suited my needs, compact and has the power for my needs - but if you can get the YN685 for $109 or better USD - its a great bargain vs Canon's 600EX for example

Simon brings to your attention a good point about the 70D's specific ETTL 'Bounce' flash issue... the 70D does not play nice with the new STM Canon lenses if you want to use bounce flash. It underexposes. A workaround is to use the 70D's back button for Flach Exposure Lock and this seems to give a more reasonable result.

Some may argue that the issue is with most or all lenses but many limit it to STMs

I have a pair of YN685s as well. Using them with a YN622C-TX. For the price they are quite good. ETTL works fine although in manual they occasionally fire at full power when set to a lower value. Seems to be a 622C quirk, not the 685s from what I can tell as it happens with a 430EX II + 622C also.

For $50 USD the 622C-TX is definitely worth purchasing along with a 685.

Best? I'd suggest the Canon 600 RT.
Best Bargain, one of the Yongnuo's mentioned or a used 580EX2
