Couple of 1D & 1DII questions.

I just acquired a 1D and a 1DII from another member. I've never used either before. I have some questions about these cameras right off the bat.

1.) Do I need to bother with the Firewire connection and Personal Functions?
2.) About how big can I print 8MP and 4MP images?
3.) Will DPP (I have 3 & 4), or LR 5.7 open the raw files from these bodies?

the only thing I think you'll need Firewire for is to change the owner information (if it exists and you want to change it)

Thanks. Some of the personal functions may be of use, depending on how I use the cameras. Mostly, they are just a couple of toys. Have you ever used a USB to FIREWIRE adapter?

My DPP V 4.1.50.0 does not read 1DS2 RAW files. I also have 3.7.3.0 which does.

You may have finally found a use for DNGs.

Not sure if anyone is interested or not, but LR 5.7 opens raw files from both the 1D and 1DII.

I have printed from the 8MP body, as large as 16x20. Looks great.
And the 4MP has some 8x10's from it that are great.

Their files open in everything basically, except Canon's latest DPP4 which excludes most cameras anyways. The 1D straight up drops TIFs anyways, which is cool, as it's RAW format.

Thanks, that is about what I figured from the pixel dimensions of each. Getting the controls down on the 1DII. Wow, they are different than my 6D/70D. I want to shoot my grandson's spring athletic stuff with the 1DII, and compare to what I get from the 70D. Oh, the 1D (not II) manual says raws are .CRW, and I am getting the .TIF files. Thanks for putting that out, too. Having some difficulties with 580EX II, but my 430EX two works fine, so it is probably some on-flash function I have set.

One thing I am having real troubles with is: Does my wife really not notice the difference between a 6D and 1DII? Or is she silently noticing gear I buy, and planning a FREAKING HUGE SHOE BUYING BINGE! She never seems to notice when I buy new anything.

The 1D control system is way, way different from today's stuff. Having to do two-button pressues/holds to change things and navigate is backwards compared to today's stuff, but after a while it becomes natural I found. I liked that I never accidentally changed modes, settings, or anything really.

I used the 1D2 in a dark warehouse at ISO 3200 with a moderately fast prime (90mm F2.8 VC; could have used an 85mm F1.8 for an extra stop I guess) for the FPS while the kids were playing at a birthday party.

I've probably made about 200 exposures around the house. I spent some time playing with the JPG settings and don't like what I see. I am just so used to how the Picture Styles work that I am struggling a bit. I may just stick to all raw on the 1DII. It is easier to run a standard routine on import than to dink with these archaic JPG setting. I agree with you about the no accidental settings changes. So far, well worth the money.

From the 4MP ancient 1Dc, I grabbed this image one night with a bounced flash that was off camera.

From resolution it's a 4" x 5" image. But I was able to scale it to 10" and still get a great print where the eyes were still detailed (printed just slightly smaller than 10" to frame it like an 8x10.

The color and tones still are relevant compared to today's cameras. This sucker is like 15 years old!

I figured out that I must be doing something wrong with the JPG settings. I had it setup like this:

SET1: Sat +4, Cont +1
SET2: Sat +5, Cont +2
SET3: Sat -2, Cont -2 (lowest setting)

I changed the active SETn to each successive option, and took a shot. I shot JPG only and could not tell the difference between the 3 JPG shots on a 22" monitor. I set it to RAW only. The raw file looked better SOOC than any of the JPGs. Still working on this. I want to shoot that kids' athletics JPG for the buffer depth.

I never shot it JPG, the buffer handles RAW just fine I found. I commonly burst 10~12 images at at time on the 1D2 birding and it always kept up. I wouldn't worry about JPG unless you just need it. You'll slam a thousand photos real fast in a single session.

I think I remember people talking about using Lightroom to take a RAW, edit it how they want, then adjust in camera JPG options to a style and set it that way, to get the closest output so that they know what it will look like without editing, for someone that wants to shoot JPG and basically not edit it.

Just remember, these are 10~15 year old JPG engines. They're not nearly as nice to the images as today's JPG engines are. The RAW lets you process with today's JPG engines.

I agree with you. I've never hit the 16 frame buffer limit on my 70D. The likelihood of hitting 20+ frame on the 1DII with only 1FPS difference is slim. Raw it is! I don't mind. I use LR 5.7 and can easily setup some import processes. I do use my 6D/70D in JPG frequently. When shooting flash or outdoors in daylight, I use JPG. Everything else is raw.

I just got done messing with the Color Matrix stuff, too. I didn't see a bunch of difference there, either. If I had spent this much time setting up my LR Import parameters, I'd be done by now!

For now, I am really enjoying the HANDFUL of camera that is the 1DII.
