Couple of 1D & 1DII questions.

I agree with you. I've never hit the 16 frame buffer limit on my 70D. The likelihood of hitting 20+ frame on the 1DII with only 1FPS difference is slim. Raw it is! I don't mind. I use LR 5.7 and can easily setup some import processes. I do use my 6D/70D in JPG frequently. When shooting flash or outdoors in daylight, I use JPG. Everything else is raw.

I just got done messing with the Color Matrix stuff, too. I didn't see a bunch of difference there, either. If I had spent this much time setting up my LR Import parameters, I'd be done by now!

For now, I am really enjoying the HANDFUL of camera that is the 1DII.

The beautiful thing is, the full size RAW from these two D's process very quickly, which is super fun being able to transfer the files near instantly, followed up by super fast processing thanks to the size. While still looking totally ace.

On the subject of bursts to capture a moment, where 8 FPS comes in real handy. 8 FPS goes by pretty quickly, so I often used it to capture a moment by leading up to it with a burst, I didn't even have to use the full 8 FPS, and found myself doing it in 3~4 exposures as a lot of these moments were less than a second any ways in duration, so the burst was a function of getting closer to having an exposure occur at the precise moment in between start and completion of the action you're trying to capture.

As an example, I was shooting a 600mm lens on the 1D2 from a kayak in the flats of the gulf of mexico. This is at ISO 800 too. I would start my burst right as the massive pelican would extend it's neck for the dive. Then let her rip. I stopped when I knew the splash was over. Usually 3~4 images, not the full 8 FPS it's capable of.

USB to Firewire doesn't work with 64-bit machines. You might try an old 32-bit.
One more thing, the 1D is a Panasonic CCD sensor. All the rest of the 1 series are CMOS. The CCD sensor excels at portraits. I still use mine for that occasionally.
