You mentioned shooting wildlife, try a better beamer. A flashmeter is impractical for that sort of work though.

If I'm spending the money I don't need the best, but I don't mind the best if it's worth the money.

Some things you spend more money and all you get is unnecessary extras. sooo

Is there a reason why I should get the 478D over the 478DR? I know it's cheaper, but is the DR better enough that's its worth the extra $$$

Is there an even better one that I should get? Pretend I have no spending limit... if I buy a $200 one and then in a year buy the $400 one than that's $600 I'd rather just spend $600 and get the "best."

Thanks,
Seth

compare sekonic meters:

http://www.sekonic.com …/all/comparisonchart.aspx (external link)

your logic around the meter $$$ is the same as I would have suggested before you decided on the full manual meter … i.e. not having an ETTL flash on hand is a mistake. So as always, the decision is up to you.

The DR has (radio triggering with power control)

Do I need that?

your logic around the meter $$$ is the same as I would have suggested before you decided on the full manual meter (I'm not sure what you mean?)

not having an ETTL flash on hand is a mistake (And why is that? if I were doing weding or sports photography and didn't have time to cahnge the settings I could see that, but if I have time to change the flash setting why do I need ETTL?)

Thanks,
Seth

For a life long light meter what would you buy?

I know it is my choice, and if I decide to go with what you suggest I won't blame/or hold it against you if I don't like it.

DR model is only for if you use actual PocketWizard ControlTL triggers. It lets you test fire and adjust your strobes from the meter, a convenience feature.

if you get jsut the D you can't use pocketwizards with it?

In the future if I use them (Pocketwizards) will it be helpful to have that option?

At this point if you dont have pocket wizards already, dont buy them its a brand that pretty much killed itself by creating a bad TOP END product.

It's helpful in a studio setting where you have a PocketWizard system controlling one or more lights, and your camera on a stand. It saves you from having to buy and carry an extra PocketWizard controller around when you're metering just to test fire and/or adjust your lights. It's a time-saving efficiency feature for commercial photographers and not necessary, just a nice-to-have if you use that particular trigger system.

But I could use another trigger system with the D and it would do the same as if I used the DR with multiple pocket wizards? Follow me?

If you build a studio and commit to pocketwizard brand triggering (which I don't recommend either) the DR model gives you a nice way to trigger the lights that is more convenient and less expensive than buying and carrying another PW just for the test button. And if you use the PW ControlTL system to control multiple studio strobes (which you don't, shouldn't and probably never will since it's old tech now) it would let you adjust light power levels from the meter also.
