Has anybody used the Amazon prime service for photo backup? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chaks

I was considering it as an additional backup (not my primary/only backup).

Just not looking forward to the incredibly long upload process...

No, but not for the reason you might expect.

I hear it's reliable, and it's cheap. But ... the major downside in my case, is my upload speed. At about 1Mbs DSL upload, it will take me weeks and weeks to upload just 1 TB of data ... and I have multiple TB's stored up thru the years. So consider your upload speed, and weigh in whether a catastrophe could strike during the upload. This of course is an unknowable (who knows the future). For me, I just buy a couple of ext. drives and be done with it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the terms of service don't allow commercial use, and on top of that general ban they specifically(!) exclude "operating a photography business." That turned me off from the service (though it might be great for personal use).

It is slow, but if you're already an Amazon Prime member for the free shipping and video stuff, then it's a cheap way to have an off-site archive. After uploading about a quarter TB and seeing it take more than a week, I'm going to just put selected files there.

That's stupid. I'll stick to Google Drive for business for now, even if it's more expensive. Unlimited errything.

Many people have contacted Amazon for clarification on this issue. Amazons response has been that archiving Images commercial or personal is ok. The TOS is referring to using the backup service to distribute images for commercial use. So you can not backup your images then give a client access to those images for review or download. They are only concerned with operating a photography business with their service.

If you run a photography business the images you shoot for any reason are still your personal property. I would contact Amazon for your own confirmation but I have seen many people post emails with this clarification before.

Bringing this thread back to life.....

...because Amazon recently offered $15 credit to Prime members just to have them upload their photos as archives. I've uploaded just a few photos as a "okay, let's see what happens," and I got $15 credited right away.

So, for those who've been using Amazon as a photo storage, what's your verdict. I don't want to upload my entire, sizable collection only to find that I regret the action.

I use Backblaze B2 for my main off-site backups and at the moment just about come into the free 1TB plan.

I do use Amazon free (Prime) storage for a full size exported 100% quality jpg of my images for a secondary backup. This also makes it easy to view/show them on my iPad using the Amazon photos app.

My broadband is pretty quick and I get around 15-20Mb upload speeds (around 80Mb download), but it did take a few days to get the initial backup done, but now it's just adding any new files so only take a minute or two usually.

What happens to all your uploaded photos on Amazon Prime Photo when you don't continue with the Prime membership? I suppose you won't have any access to them but they'd be all there when you decided to rejoin the membership? In other words, Amazon Prime Photo will not delete all your uploaded photos while you're no longer the Prime member?

I've copied this paragraph from an online post I came across:

"Amazon photos are free, up to 5GB. As long as you are below that, you do not need to be a prime member to store, access or share photos. Anything above that and you will need a prime subscription".

(With Prime, you get unlimited image files storage)

I assume that anything over that limit would be deleted (Not sure what they will delete. Oldest ones first?).

As long as they are secondary backups (i.e. you have others locally or elsewhere), you would have time to upload elsewhere if you are cancelling Prime.

Can raw images be uploaded, or just jpeg?

When you see my camera gear you'll think I'm a pro.
When you see my photos you'll know that I'm not.

Instead of being deleted, perhaps they would just not be accepted for upload until you started paying for Prime?
