This is a long shot, but I'm looking for software that I can keep track of places along with tags for quick searches. I've been thinking Trello or Filemaker might be good for this, but wanted to see if anyone else had suggestions before I make the time investment in creating something on one of those platforms.

I've been using Garmin's Basecamp for keeping up with my tracklogs. I like to plan to hit a specific spot and then take a route back home that is different than before. I use my handheld Garmin to mark spots or subjects of interest and then label them (barn, one tree on a hill, waterfall, etc) for future reference in the GPS. Garmin's basecamp is not good for noting whether a particular spot would be good to revisit in a different season or at sunset.

So, I'd like to have a "card catalog" that can list locations by the keywords/tags I log on them. This way I can plan a route based on locations I think are best for that time of year or coming natural light situation.

Using Garmin Basecamp, Lightroom Maps, eBird.org, the Photographers Ephemeris, and SunsetWX one can become quite efficient in almost "sciencing" a shoot.

Have you considered Google Earth especially now that the Pro version is free?

Just create a folder directory of the points you want to record. Thereafter, it is easy to create kml/kmz files.

It's what i use for planning my holiday routes and photographic locations.

I didn't know Google Earth Pro was now free! Just upgraded ;)

Will give the foldering a try although it might not be as robust as I'm looking for. It would be great if there was a way to label a place mark with keywords like Spring, Fall so I could quickly search or filter based on keywords.

I've tried Trello, Google Maps Pro (thanks again DunnoWhen), and Delicious Library 3 out of desperation. Trello is super flexible, but you have to be meticulous in sticking to a notes/editing process in order to make the search function work. You could make it work through a combination of columns and color codes, but you'd have to have one hell of an amazing plan up front.

Google Earth Pro is excellent if you don't need to search for features of a location or through your notes about the location. I will continue to use Google Earth for future location discovery and planning.

Delicious only works with barcodes. It's competitor Libib might be useable with a lot of manual effort.

I still haven't tried Filemaker Pro 3....the price tag is deterring me for this minor endeavor.

The best thing I've found thus far is an older software I used to use for keeping track of serial numbers and business expenses: Yojimbo (external link). It has all the foldering and tagging features necessary for cataloging locations. The only downside is it isn't shareable. But I'll roll with this one until I find something better.

Before paying for FileMaker, why not try LibreOffice/OpenOffice base for creating your (relational) database. They are both OpenSource (free) options.
