Does anybody have an opinion on this lens? I already own a 17-50 mm 2.8 Tamron lens for Canon. Is Sigma 16-35 1.8 worth the extra $650?

Thanks,
Chaks

I assume you are asking about the 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM art lens:

Its a stunning lens- in my opinion consider this a prime lens that also happens to zoom. It would replace the need for a 24mm, 28mm, 30mm, or 35mm prime lens.

The downside- it's big and heavy. Here's a nice review:

Add the sigma dock to be able to fine tune the focus at all focal lengths, and it's an excellent lens.

If you mean the Sigma Art 18-35 1.8, I think it is the best crop lens going. Very sharp, very fast. Many complain about the weight, but it is not that heavy. It never comes off my camera. I have a 300l, 70-200, and 150-600. The 18-35 is not very big or heavy to me. Overblown.

I had it , super sharp, first upgrade from the 18-55 kit . So it felt really heavy..
However In low light it didn't always focus quickly. . And front focused sometimes and back focused sometimes. .

Can not add much more to that. It's an amazing lens and one of the best, if not the best, crop lenses out right now. It is a big lens for its range but it's basically several fast primes in one package.

this is going to be my next lens but I'm worried about all the focusing issues I've been reading. Is this overblown or legit? Has sigma made any corrections to newer copies?

I have read very few issues with this lens focus....or really any of the new art lenses.

I did have to adjust the lens to my camera body using the dock but lenses AND camera bodies all have focus adjustment variables. Lens rental did a great article on it of you want to learn more.

No lens is going to be perfect on every body and sigma does have a rep for being loose on their tolerances. Like I said, I had to adjust mine to my camera. Took about an hour and it is perfect now. But Nothing on this lens has changed since the day it was released. I haven't even seen any firmware updates for it. So if you don't like the lens as it is now you may want to pass since it won't be changing any time soon.

sift through the threads for the Art series lenses..18-35,. 35, 50

you will read of quite a few not happy with the lens focusing issues.. some having to return and exchange more than once for a decent copy,,

then there are many who are extremely happy,,

seems like with these lenses the dock is almost a must have, except for the lucky few seems like most have to make some adjustments

so i say go for it if you are prepared to accept that it may take some time to fine tune it

I have never bought a sigma lens because of these complaints. I have had great luck with the tamron lenses and may buy the 35mm vc soon.

The complainers are always the noisiest of the bunch. I had the 18-35 previously with my 7d and now I have the 50. Both are/were a joy to shoot. I had to dial in the 18-35 with the dock, but the 50 was bang-on right out of the box. I recommend buying from a seller with a good return policy.
