Blatent vote farming doesn't get my attention, I ignore them and move on due to the presentation. Then again I don't care about competitions in the least.

That said, there is the presentation of simply making a competition known, and asking for anyone willing to participate to participate, however, minus asking for specific votes for only their work. That, I can appreciate. But I still don't, because I just don't care about competitions.

But good luck to them all!

Very best,

Usually, those who are asking to vote for their crapshot aren't involved in photography contest, but in promoting action of the product and such.
They ask to vote and if you are, you'll see some advertisement.

True photography contests are done with paid enrollment and selected jury.

I really don’t understand this modern day phenomena of on-line photography competitions whereby the entrants shortlisted tout for votes on photography forums such as this. Are these people really that insecure that they need to gain victory at any cost regardless of whether or not their own entry is the best. Surely the winner of the afore-mentioned competition should be chosen on its own merits and not because the photographer was able to canvas more support and votes than the other entrants.

Pretty much why we don't allow it here - some people brought in a lot of their buddies to vote for their entries on a POTN contest, skewing the results. Since then, it's been unallowed here to promote your entries into any contest, anywhere, on POTN. The thread which may have inspired yours has been removed.

Agreed. It is very annoying. It's actually kind of sad.

I won a photo contest on a nature center's facebook page because they saw my photo and asked if they could enter it in the contest (weird I know). Then they said I should enter regularly. So I entered a couple more. I didn't canvas for votes and didn't win those. The funny thing is, mine were probably the only decent ones. The one that beat mine out was an out of focus shot of a flower. The lady just shared the post and bugged all of her friends to vote for it. I stopped after that, because it was a waste of time.

I wasn't mad and still don't care. My point is just that I agree with you and it shouldn't be a popularity contest. I don't even think the artist or photographer should be revealed until after voting is done.

I think its less "insecurity" and more "and win a 5d3, d10, A7rII, trip to Bali" etc. Merits go out the window when the prize is more valuable than the entries

Same principle - report 'em and we'll delete 'em.

Since that thread is gone now, here's the gist for those who missed it: A post in Wildlife asked for votes for a contest entry by someone the poster knew. Members expressed the opinion that they'd vote for the photo they chose among all entries, if they voted at all.
