The 28-300 is an option to consider. @Tom Reichner: We are going to be staying in Lappland for a week and the lake by the house is said to have a sea hawk population. That is why I want to shoot tele again! What about the Canon 70-300 IS (NOT 75-300) (non-L). Great on full frame.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.

Get a 200 2.8II. Light, inconspicuous, fast, no overlap. multidisciplinary visual guy, professor of visual art, irresponsible and salty.

I would avoid the wonderful v1 of this lens with the built-in hood, as no focusing parts are available. So if it goes down, you may or may not even have manual focus. I had one. multidisciplinary visual guy, professor of visual art, irresponsible and salty.

Great lens, but not the right choice given the latest information from the OP (about wanting the tele for bird photos). 5DSR, 6D, 16-35/4L IS, 85L II, 100L macro, Sigma 150-600C

Well, if birding is the primary function, either the Sigma 150-600 or Tamron is it. 150 is even a nice jump from his 85. While I agree those are excellent options for birding, none of them meet the OP's requirement for "compact". The EF-S 55-250 STM on a SL1 meets that need.
