That's my vacation kit too but I also bring along the 24mm STM and a S110 compact camera.

OK. Truth be told, you got me. I do throw in the 35 f/2 IS too and, of course, I have the iPhone as well...

Hi!

A second camera is not an option. Same goes for a compact as an addition.

The 28-135 wouldn't benefit me at all. The 28-300 is an option to consider.

@Tom Reichner: We are going to be staying in Lappland for a week and the lake by the house is said to have a sea hawk population. That is why I want to shoot tele again!

What about the Canon 70-300 IS (NOT 75-300) (non-L). Great on full frame.

That's awesome! It sounds like the type of opportunity in which you will want to have every millimeter of focal length you can possibly get.
I hope it works out great for you and that you have an awesome vacation there in Lapland!

"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

You already have an 85. Get a 200 2.8II. Light, inconspicuous, fast, no overlap.

Excellent suggestion... The 200mm 2.8 is certainly worth consideration.

Thanks, I like mine. I would avoid the wonderful v1 of this lens with the built-in hood, as no focusing parts are available. So if it goes down, you may or may not even have manual focus. I had one.

I like 85mm a lot, hate 135, and can use 180-200 very often. I probably use the extremes of most zooms I have. I hope it works.

Great lens, but not the right choice given the latest information from the OP (about wanting the tele for bird photos).

There is no solution I know of to get birding-suitable reach on a FF camera with a lens that could be described as light or compact. The suggestion of SL1 + 55-250 STM is going to get you much more reach from the combination of 1.6x sensor, extra 50mm, plus the 18 vs 12 mp difference. And it's super light.

The 70-300mm DO lens is not one I'd invest money in. It's short, but it's fat and not even that light. The reason they can be bought at half price is that the quality is not up to par with even the non-L 70-300 IS. And the 70-300mm L IS is worlds better.

100-400L IS II?
Well, if birding is the primary function, either the Sigma 150-600 or Tamron is it. 150 is even a nice jump from his 85.

While I agree those are excellent options for birding, none of them meet the OP's requirement for "compact". The EF-S 55-250 STM on a SL1 meets that need.
