Ive always wondered about workshops. Was this you first one?
I've been to half a dozen or so over the last year. They ranged from very informative and enlightening, to group shoots masquerading as workshops, from which I learned nothing. In hindsight, the quality of the workshops correlates well to the quality of the work done by the instructors/studio. Some photographers are dedicated to teaching, others are dedicated to filling their unsold studio time with participants who will help pay their rent, with little thought and preparation given to actually making valuable educational experiences.
In the Bay Area, I've gone to workshops like this one at Photigy (photigy.com) which was for just 4 students, very hands-on, and packed full of information on technique and specialized light modifiers. I've also enjoyed those hosted by Leon Saperstein (studio-fab.com), which are fashion and beauty oriented, with Leon offering frank and spot-on critique of the participants' work. These were the best, and so far the only ones I've been to locally that were true educational workshops.
