I have a point and shoot camera right now that I use a lot and that gets the job done, but I am thinking about getting a DSLR, and am looking closely at the D40 and D50 bodies. I do industrial photography mostly for technical reports but occasionally for fun I stop and take a more creative photograph.

Due to the sound noise of the lenses in the title of this thread, right now I am moving away from those and thinking about getting quieter Canon STM lenses like the Canon EF-S 10-18 F/3.5-5.6 STM lens and the Canon EF-S 18-55 F/3.5-5.6 STM lens. For me, weighing the 2.8 aperture versus the quieter sound has been difficult. But now I am thinking that a tripod would solve my low light issues. And for the photography I do, I want the entire scene in focus anyway. So if I want a smaller aperture and a long exposure, and I solve that with a tripod, then I can get the quieter lenses. And now that I am thinking quieter lenses, that I could use for video, I could look at the D60...

Heya,

For what you're describing, I'd just get a Canon G16 or something and call it a day. F2.8 or faster through the whole range, covers your ultrawide and wide. Smaller, simple, still well made. Takes flash stuff just the same so you could setup off-camera flashes if you wanted.

Also, why do you need F2.8? A tripod and long exposure will do the job without the $400+ price tag for one lens, let alone the other $200 for the other lens, on top of your camera.

Very best,

Some photographs I took that did not end up in a report.

I have the tamron 17-50 non vc and a tokina 12-24. The tamron is probably my most used lens. The tokina is my goto landscape, architecture lens

I did get a G15 and have been using it instead of my cheaper Fuji point and shoot and love it. Last week I was on a construction site where I was constantly working the exposure compensation and the flash compensation. I would not have been able to get the photographs I got with my cheaper point and shoot. And would have never carried a DSLR with multiple lenses and a tripod into that place. I was not there to photograph. I was there to look and see and document and write a report. For what I am doing, I don't need a larger sensor or a tripod. So far, this is working for me. Thank you.

And for other stuff, I ended up with a Canon 50D, 70 to 200 f/4 L IS, and 24 to 105 f/4 L IS. I have been taking pictures of runners and really like the center point ai servo autofocus of the 50D and the USM motors on these lenses, and don't need 2.8.
