I'm also a Machinist and program and run Millers, Lathes, Water jets and Lazer cutting machines. I find that when your making one of something you can almost always buy it cheaper than you can make it although there are times when you need to modify or customize things then I will do it myself. I'm in the shop long enough with out having a major personal job to keep me there longer. I'd rather be taking photographs.

It depends on what it is, some photography related items are crazy expensive for simple items that I could make easily, there is also the satisfaction of doing something yourself.
