I am looking for a lightweight carbon fiber tripod for backpacking in the urban environment with something like a Canon G16 and a 430EZ flash. The tripods I see appear to be for larger DSLR setups and heavier lenses. I see people asking, would this tripod be ok for my great big camera and lens? And now I am asking the opposite. Maybe there are lighter weight model numbers for the versions I see. Maybe I should not go lighter due to stiffness and vibration. Maybe the best option that has smaller diameter legs is aluminum. I would like to spend 100 to 200 dollars, but would be willing to spend up to 300 to 400 dollars if there was one that was just what I am looking for. I like the look of the MeFOTO Globe Trotter, but wonder if there is something with smaller diameter legs that would meet my needs. I am looking at a Giottos VGR8255 on ebay without head, that I like because I already have and like the Giotto's MH-1001 ball head. Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you.

Tim.

I was going to suggest the MeFoto, just saw one at the store in CF and is looked super. It also uses one leg for monopod configuration. To get tall and provide steadiness you need some structure.

Oh my goodness. Look here http://www.mefoto.com/products/help-me-choose (external link) where you can look a the different MeFOTO models by color, folded length, minimum height, and maximum height.

The MeFOTO RoadTrip has a folded length of 15.4, and goes up to 61.6 inches. It is aluminum. It weighs 3.6 pounds.

The MeFOTO GlobeTrotter has a folded length of 16.1, and goes up to 64.2 inches. In aluminum it weights 4.6 pounds. In carbon fiber it weighs 3.7 pounds.

I find the Giottos Y center tube interesting. The TL8254 Classic Series folds to 19.3 inches, with a max height with the center column down of 52.8 inches and up 65.4 inches, but it is 2.6 pounds and with the Y center column, the diameter of the whole thing would actually take up less space in the sports bag I put stuff in. I have also been liking the way the center part of the Vanguard Alta Pro 254CT comes out and goes horizontal. But its closed length is also near 20 inches.

So then the Giottos YTL8354 PRO has the Y center tube and the center tube comes up and flips and goes horizontal. 3.1 pounds. 21 inches folded. The same length as my folding golf umbrella. This is the smaller of three sizes in this range of tripods.

I started a thread at https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=17879689 for what appears to be a reasonably priced CF portable which is available on Amazon (see http://www.amazon.com …nic-Olympus/dp/B015A102OM (external link)). Specifically it is about the ZOMEI Z699C Carbon Fiber Portable Tripod at $150 with ballhead. Reviews seem for the most part to be positive.

Yes !

I dont use mine often, but it is perfect for when i do

I took the centre column out, and use the ballhead directly on the spider.
I use mine with a Leica M240 and it works well.

just a word of advice for small lightweight tripods
On concrete or sand they are fine, on grass they can sometimes not be heavy enough, and "float" on the grass - hanging your camera bag or water bottle from the hook underneath remedies this pretty quick though.
