Now under less light, and especially artificial lighting at higher ISOs (this was very low light as evidenced by the EXIF and the cat's eyes), I lose alot of detail. Here is 12800 right from the raw through DPP, then a 100% crop top, and post processed bottom. 12800 is an "acquired taste", perhaps. If I had a 1DX, this would obviously be much cleaner, and I would love to try out a 1DX2, but with the huge restructuring of NS, all our plans for large purchases are on hold.

Yeah the 7D2 (just like my 7D was) is a light hungry sensor. Exposure is everything I did some tests last year and compared it to ny 5D3. Overcast day, same exposures and the 5D3 files were much cleaner and edged out the 7D2 in detail.

What are you using for raw processing and post processing?

I was shooting the cat this morning as the kids are all still in bed, and happened to be at ISO 4000 myself to stop her from movement at 100mm. This is directly from the camera, no post processing. Perhaps I am a bit more forgiving I guess.

So you did not download and go through DPP or something like that? I noticed several months ago DPP 4 did not allow to turn off NR in the preferences. Some update corrected it. It was applying NR even if I had it disabled in my camera. I know you know what you are doing but I thought I'd ask.

I find that I prefer LESS luminance NR on high ISO images, like your 12,800 cat. Leaving more grain in also shows more fine detail. Since you can't remove all the grain anyway, leave it there. You can remove its more obvious nature by going lower in sharpening.

Good review. Liked the images. Though there was one quibble I have with it. They mention that the Wi-Fi is built in to the camera. It isn't, of course, as it requires the WFT-E8A wireless file transmitter. Other than that just happy to see more information from new sources.

I downloaded a raw at 25,6K and used NIK Define=remarkable.
This camera will change my birding but from what I've read it will
also landscape as well...
I think first test photo I want to do though is macro with either the MP-65
or the 100L.
I guess I'm starting to get a little excited too.

I don't think it's just CPS members**. I ordered mine through Wex immediately after the announcement and they contacted me on Friday to say that they were expecting to ship them out on the 27th or I could collect on the 28th. I expect all of the big retailers will be receiving stock. I would check with who you ordered it from.

**I happen to be a CPS member (for all it's worth!) but Wex don't know that.

Ordered mine with Calumet.

On another note though must say that had a nose at your images and wow,stunning work.

found a link with downloadable test chart images for the 1Dx II and the D5

i downloaded the 25,600 and 51,200 ISO files for both

in LR you can see a slight advantage for the D5 in luminance noise that looks like about 1/2 a stop

Using the 51,200 ISO file
- with the small amount of basic NR (+25 luminance and +25 Masking) you get a pretty ok file but the D5 is that little bit cleaner


My next comment is based on the fact that I have only been looking at 5DSR and A7Rii files for the last 6 months. You don't need more detail that 20 megapixels but you can tell the difference for sure. The upcoming 5D4, with 28-30 MPix, should have a decent 25,600ISO file and have more detail for cropping which for weddings should be a great compromise.

There are times when I think the 5Dsr might be a better choice for what I shoot=birds/animals mostly but

I guess the best solution is a combo of crop sensor body and the DXii

People that have seen both are saying its got a stop on the 1Dx2. Doesnt matter to me. 250000 is just unbelievable to me especially with the 1Dx2 AF system......how much more at that point is anyone guess......I think on paper the D5 is the better camera

still would not get anyone seriously invested to make a change over 1/2-1 stop iso

There is nothing confirmed. Its all rumor, assumption and wishful thinking.
