Just got mine delivered. Probably among the first few in India. Though I didn't get much time to test it tonight, I did fire few quick fire shots (of what I could find baring angry wife and screaming kid).

I do see myself using up to 25600 pretty frequently now. 51200 seems decent and usable after a bit of processing. I didn't test beyond that as of now. Tomorrow may be. :)

12800 / 25600 / 51200 jpgs (with default RAW -> JPG conversion. I guess noise reduction at 14 points). RAW files uploaded as well.

really appreciate these - thanks

(a few of yours using the raws)

So far, what I see (not specifically with just these photos but everything so far), is that Canon has continued with what it started with the 5DSR, then the 80D and now a lower pixel density, large pixel camera that I think, while very good at high ISO, may actually shine the most at ISO 100 in a studio - with beautiful rich colours on human skin tones. I think the A7Rii may still have very slightly better colours and DR at low ISO but it is getting much much closer with this camera.

That's pretty impressive. So, can one conclude that the shadow recovery gap to the Exmor sensor is subsantially narrowed if not eliminated?

I see this cam has iTR. Not sure how many previous 1DX owners followed 7D2 forums but I did a summary on iTR and it should be close on the 1DX II.

iTR – Intelligent Tracking and Recognition which executes AF by recognizing faces and colors.

In AI Servo mode, the camera remembers the color at the position it is focused on first, then continues to track and focus the subject switching AF points to track that color. It is an assist to the normal AF tracking system. If it can’t find a colour it will track the normal way but will slow things down as the system uses resources looking for a colour. A person in a brown track suit with a brown hat running in front of bushes in late fall is not so good.

In one-shot AF mode iTR basically looks for faces. The manual states that when activated it will take longer to acquire focus which makes sense. I’m not sure if a person could even tell as AF happens in milliseconds. It also states that if a face is too small in the frame it may have trouble finding it.

On the 7D2 iTR never activates in spot, single or expansion mores. If iTR is enabled (camera menus) it will activate in all zone AF modes only. So you may want to keep this in mind because if it is enabled and you go from expansion to zone AF tracking characteristics will change. It is enabled from the factory on the 7D2.

I turned mine off long ago but plan to try it this summer. There were a few known birders who tested it and said it worked good in AI Servo. Art Morris was one.

Of course there may be some differences on the 1DX II. Just thought a heads up might be helpful.

The 1DX had iTR too...

This is an interesting question, and I think the video linked before from Michael Tapes does a fantastic job at showing the different approaches of the Nikon vs Canon vs Sony sensor sensor - especially how the 1Dx sensor acts much, much better at the highest ISOs - one can probably conclude that the new 1DX II sensor has taken it even further - and hopefully closed the gap materially in the lower ISOs where the Sony Nikon Sensor was and is materially better

The video (very worth watching)
https://youtu.be/zSzTUPJiPJc (external link)

A screenshot from that video comparing finally where the 1Dx passes all the other sensors - ie 6400 ISO and pushed 5 stops - almost everywhere else the other Sony / Nikon sensor is better that the 1Dx sensor - the question is, how much better is the new sensor.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

I have the 1DX manual and can't find it. It is under I in the 7D2 manual index. It must be called something else or under another heading. I mentioned it because it was a feature listed at Canon USA's site.

1Dx has iTR,
http://www.learn.usa.canon.com …ation.shtml?categoryId=12 (external link)

the whole article is good, but the iTR part starts on page two.

iTR and iSA are two of the things that separated the 1Dx AF system from the 5D3.

I think what makes the iTR in the 1Dx2 "new" is the tripling of "pixel metering sensors" and the algorithms behind it.

The "new" of that listing isn't the iTR, it's the 360K metering sensor bit...

The info is under the AF4 menu, Auto AF point selection: EOS iTR AF. It's pretty much the same info you posted about the 7D2, but it actually was introduced for the 1DX (with 100K metering) before the 7D2 (with 150K metering).

Actually guys, there's another part of the tracking system that's new and that is the 1D X Mark II now leverages the highly refined gyro in the lens' IS system to detect which way you are moving the camera and then applies that information to the equation as well. Supposedly, this makes a big difference too.

Cheers,
Bryan

Damn, all of this high ISO talk and tracking talk just makes me want to go on safari with the 1Dx MkII but I know that if I make this purchase my better half will severely injure me. Maybe I should upgrade my medical plan as well as place an order for this thing.

Thanks. Now I have to get it because of the gyro.
