Damn, all of this high ISO talk and tracking talk just makes me want to go on safari with the 1Dx MkII but I know that if I make this purchase my better half will severely injure me. Maybe I should upgrade my medical plan as well as place an order for this thing.

Is your 5D3 gripped? If so, then you might be able to make the jump to 1DX (and sell the 5D3 + grip) without her knowing anything (other than the missing funds in the bank account).

Nice try and not gripped.... but she has a grip on finances. at least at the bank. If I sell the 5D MkIII, the 7D MkII, the 400mm DO and maybe the 100-400 ver II I start getting closer .... but if I'm going to stay a nature photographer, I'm going to have to start getting really to wildlife if all I have left is a Rokinon 14mm.

Your equipment is more than adequate. You have the same as I, and even though the 1dx2 looks great, it is not going to add $6000 better results for how I already shoot and process. I might add a 1dx though as people dump them.

Smart.
The 100400ii and 400DOii will still be awesome 8 years from now.
The 1DXii will be surpassed by Sony in 2-3 years....OK, just teasing (a little).

If I had a choice of T2i + 100-400ii or 1DXii + Tamron 150-500 I'd enjoy the T2i (assuming gifts and I couldn't sell.....)

By the sounds of the noises coming out of the Nikon camp, I think many Nikon users would rank the new D500 ahead of the D5 and maybe even the 810 as well.

My top 5 would be

Sony A7Rii (best portraits)
1DX II (best sports)
D810 (Best combo)
D500 (Best Crop)
5DSR (best studio)

THIS THIS AND THIS!

I'd be waiting for that point where you raise it and spray off a 14fps burst, and the wife's head turns towards you ala The Exorcist.

I know. Glass lasts a long time and bodies obsolete has been my phrase for a long time and I've gotten some great shots with the gear I have. That said, as higher and higher ISO's become possible, for wildlife, sharp but slower glass becomes an option. I once wanted 300 f/2.8 or 400 f/2.8. In a 'future world', the 100-400 at f/5.6 will get the results.

I love the creamy bokeh of those fast lenses, but as I review safari client images that shoot wide open at f/2.8, often if the eyes are sharp, the nose or ears are soft, slight oof, so they should be shooting f/4 or f/5.6 anyway. That said, the super high ISO 10,000 idea at f/2.8 would allow shooting in near darkness.

The 1Dx1 can be had new now for under $4400.00 at a few places. I wrestled with that decision for a few days. Dark/shadow improvements and the DR on the new sensor completely changed my mind. 1Dx2 is about 1 1/2 stops better in ISO over Current 1Dx1 ( that i can see from the net ) and it has sensor technology improvements. ( we all know the rest of the updates )

If your not going to need or want this then the current 1Dx1 is a steal. I would expect lower count bodies ( under 40K ) to come in at upper 3's.....so good deals for sure.

We got the word from the tax person this year. Buy a camera or pay the tax man. The New 1Dx2 is a bod im excited about and something I can use for 6-7 years. It has exact sensor improvements I was demanding from a new body. I was so close to going D5 it wasnt even funny.

When the wife asks "What the heck is that noise?"

That's when you say, "Hm... sounds like something is loose inside the camera. But it seems to still be taking pictures fine. Guess it's not a problem."

Very interesting. I wasn't aware of this particular feature. The Mark II can use it's intelligent face detection for stills through the viewfinder. I knew about the intelligent face detection but for whatever reason I was thinking that was limited to video and live view shooting. Guess not! Awesome. :-)
