Taking my first helo flight next week, I would assume shutter speed should be up at least 1/1000th for this due to vibration of the aircraft, me and my cam?

I am also thinking of just taking a 24-105mm f4 for this flight, as some volcanoes will be photographed. I have have other lenses though like 24-70 f2.8 and a 17-40 f4.

Anyone have any insight into shooting from a helicopter?

Thanx

After being up 5 times my recommendation is to use a 24-70 lens. I would also put a circular polarizer on if your going up mid day. If your going with the doors off like I have, the temp drops so you need to dress appropriately. I would not recommend trying to swap lenses especially if the doors are off. Let me know if you have any other questions. It is highly addictive.

I am trying to keep my weight down in my bag, I was thinking of taking a 24-105 f4 its a good travel lens, and the helo is only a small part of the trip. I could leave this lens home and just take the 24-70 2.8 and the 17-40 f4

Thoughts

Better try the polarizer shooting through the plastic canopy while on the ground. The polarizer could reveal lots of stress patterns made visible by the filter. Better to discover those on the ground rather than while soaring over the scenery.

Are you more interest in

  1. the helicopter interior (with some ground details visible but tiny 'off in the distance', or
  2. the ground below, with a bit of cockput as a visual reference

If '1' bring the 17-40
If '2' bring the 24-105

You never mentioned if your body is APS-C or FF

Are the doors on or off? I did a helo flight one time to take pics of the USS Iowa before it was brought into the San Pedro harbor. We had the doors off. I shoot mostly with a 100-400 I think that is what i had at the time. Do not stick your lens outside the frame of the aircraft. It is a real pain trying to hold then and take off the lens hood.
