I have two Manfrotto Autpoles, each with a Superclamp and stud. I would like to fashion a crossbar between them. I don't know the exact width yet, but it will be in the realm of 7'-8'. I'm trying to spend under $20 on this project. It's not for photography actually. But the gear is the same.

My initial inclination is to just purchase a 10' length of 1.5" PVC and cut it to length at home once I have an exact measurement. Any ideas on best way to mount the crossbar to the Superclamps? Or another suggestion entirely?

PVC will now at that length. Get electrical conduit. The nice thing about that is you can get connectors so you can cut it in easily hauled lengths and reconnect if needed. The connectors are even more rigid than the pipe so there is no flex.

Thanks for the advice. Turns out what I wanted to hang (a bunch of climbing and skiing backpacks) is actually too heavy for the autopoles anyway. Gonna go with wall mounted hooks.

These, and some IKEA curtain rods. I got two of the 83" rods and four of the 47" rods - you can connect them together in series for just about whatever width you need.

In this shot I have two autopoles, four Super Clamps with the crossbar hooks (one pair on the back of the poles, one pair on the front of the poles), two long curtain rods put together to hold the tiles, and three short curtain rods put together to hold the paper. The longer rods are starting to sag a bit because I abuse them :P but if I'm using a roll of paper the sag doesn't matter, and with the tiles I just adjusted the hanging wires to account for the sag.

I like the 47" rods because if I disassemble them they'll fit in the back seat of my little sedan.

I can't share the finished images yet, but I'm pretty pleased with them.
