Do you do weddings? Did the pro ask for help or grudgingly agree to it. Not wanting to be a killjoy or dump in the OP as his heart is in the right place but nobody starts put thinking they will be a distraction but it happens.

He can't be a distraction if they're not taking photo's at the same venue?

Hype chimping - The act of looking at your screen after every shot, then wildly behaving like it's the best picture in the world, to try and impress other photographers around you.

All I was trying to say is renting gear so you can help the pro is a warning sign that he might be a bit too invested as a guest.

his wife is in the wedding party and the couple asked him to bring his gear

at my own wedding, I setup my brother in law with my A7Rii with the 24-70 F2.8, set it at 1/125, F3.5, auto ISO and told him to stay out of the pros way but get all the back ground crowd / friends / kids he could - he did a great job and we got at least 100 keepers that we never would have had

if you are a professional, dealing with guests with cameras and phones is part of the job - it is no big deal - it is also easy to do in a professional and polite manner that can allow everyone to feel involved etc - the couple are paying you as the pro, they are your clients, far bigger issue is an overly aggressive and not exactly professional video crew

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

My advice: just bring your camera and the 35mm lens

Get creative, be useful, but have fun.
