I have a 60D. The only reason why I want to upgrade is for video auto focus. I am happy with everything else on my 60D.

It seems like auto focus in video mode is light years ahead of 60D.

Is it worth it? Im thinking of doing this while I can still sell the 60D for a decent amount. Its got under 10k clicks

If that is what you find lacking in the 60D, then yes the 70D is a good option. You also get MFA, a bit more resolution, and a bit better ISO management.

I had a 60D and didn't do much video because of the lack of continuous AF. I actually bought the 70D so I could have a bit more control over AI-Servo AF. I am pleased with that. I liked the continuous AF in video (I already had the 24-105 STM) so much I bought the 18-55 STM and 10-18 STM just for video. I'm happy with my video setup.

Depends on how serious you are with video.

A proper video camera is still likely a better option than a dSLR used as a limited video camera. Unless your goal is shallow depth of field video.

Very best,

Very best,

I agree. The C100 Mark I with autofocus is like $2500...dirt cheap by cine standards. With a 70D configured for serious video, you would need an audio field recorder ($700 for a decent one) and square ND filters and an adapter ring (still slower than using the built-in ones on a cinema camera). I used a 70D in film school before. Utter rubbish in workflow.

It seems like huge assumptions are being made about what kind of video is being shot. If you want video of events of family or even video clips of a wedding during still photo shooting, the 70d works well, and is better than the 60d due to the dual pixel implementation (for best results, add STM lenses). The question is "is it worth spending a few hundred dollars to upgrade the video capabilities by going to the 70d", and the answer is pretty clear. Yes it is and you get other features to boot.

Telling somebody to spend thousands vs a few hundred is pretty over the top, but that is what we do here on POTN! :)

For the $$$ the 70D is a great value. Timing wise it may have been better to buy it during the holiday season. I was tempted to buy one under $899CDN brand new.

The beauty of dual pixel technology is that it virtually eliminates hunting during AF in video.

I'd jump for a 70d if I were you. I'm invested in micro 4/3 gear too so this is my video rig. If I didn't have the M43 gear I would have bought the 70d without a doubt and slowly build STM lenses for video application.

However if a new 80d comes out I'll be really looking at that camera as a casual family video rig.

The 70D is a no brainer for price and excellent video function. The sharpness is "good enough". The gh3 and gh4 still IMO is more sharper and more details than the 70D. However I still shoulda bought a 70d simply because of the dual pixel tech...I hate the hunting that happens for run/gun AF video for kids and family documentation.

If he is shooting with a 60D and is happy with it other than video AF, then it really doesn't matter. The 70D is better on all fronts, stills and video.

The other thing is the 80D is rumored to be coming shortly, as in the next few weeks at the earliest during CP+ or at the end of the year at Photokina, so I'd wait a little if possible

The upgrades in the 80D might be worth it, or they might not, if they're not, the 70D will be closed out at rock bottom pricing, if they are then you'll be happy you waited.. Especially since some of the rumored improvements are in video AF and such..

The only changes I could see coming would be 4K video and perhaps some other video recording options. The DPAF is still pretty new, and will likely be nearly the same as it is on the 70D and 7D2. If I were personally to wait until the 80D comes out, it would be to get a 70D at a cheaper price, however that would mean that the 60D would also drop in value. Any other changes in AF or resolution or high ISO performance will likely not contribute much to the video side of things.

It would be nice if the OP would come back to put in some thoughts, as this is all a one sided discussion for the most part now.

Sorry for late reply.

I dont shoot anything professional but I would like to have proper auto focus during video.

I would rather invest in a slightly more expensive body(vs my 60D) than go out and invest in focus pulling gear and all that overpriced stuff.

80D will be out of my price range. I would want to sell my 60D and use the money towards a 70D.

For example if my camera is on my steadicam rig and I have it set to low aperture. I dont really have a way of adjusting the focus while tracking the subject. Would be nice if the camera did this on its own. From what ive seen the 70D foes a decent job at this

I upgraded from the 60D to the 70D, as has been posted above, you will get exactly that improvement in AF.

Really, the 70D's DPAF makes for AF that actually works for video. My feeling has been that for decades AF has been worthless for video, period. Until now... DPAF really is something that can work professionally, without an external monitor or focusing magnifier.

I also like the touch-screen focus point select a great deal for tripod use; wouldn't help much on a steadicam...
