Other Forums

I like many I think are on more than 1 forum for our photo's.
I think being on a couple gives you a little more insight to what we are doing right or wrong.
And it could even be a way to pin point the areas where you are right or wrong.

But being from Australia I have joined a couple of them.
And quite quickly you find that if you don't make it into the inner circle you have got an up hill battle.
What I mean there is that if you post a shot that has few things wrong with it well they all will let you know.
And it is done in a way that isn't constructive at all. It is more of a put down.
I hate to say this also but Australian forums are full of cry baby's.
As if they say you have done a shot wrong and wait long enough you will get some of those who hammered your shot
Post up a shot that has all what they said was wrong but now its okay as they are posting it.
And all the ones who said you have don't your shot wrong praise theirs friends photo.

So as a warning, keep well away from Australian forums as to me they are full of people who will
only say your shot is any good is if it is the way they would have posted it.
I really don't worry about some of these people as they will only say things once others have broken the ice first.
As they don't want the back lash.
So this is my little whinge for the day, but it is all true.
I rather be here than on any Australian Photography Forum

technically, if you like the shot you've posted then all is right in the world. If others like it, then it's a bonus! If others have helpful suggestions then double bonus!!
Photography should not be a popularity contest.
Can't say I've looked at any Aussie photography forums though, sounds like a tough crowd...

Yup, would agree with the assessment of "what's good". You like it, fine. Plus, if everybody does the same, everything looks the same. The nice part of people bringing in their own ideas is that everything looks different and not always the same.

As to multiple forums: I find it too hectic and too much work. I'm just on POTN for photos.

Yep it is a tough crowd to please but there is a say that goes I think like this.
You can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please everybody all of the time.

And I think it has a true ring to it.
The comment on this were on someone elses shots that I thought were a little harsh and unwarrented.
But it is a case of what Joeseph said a popularitary contest, which the Australian ones I have looked at.
No idea why this is that was but it is.
I now just look at what is going on and have stopped making comments on there.
One reason I find it is a lot like the school yard stuff.
Those with a little more know how seem to try to make the new ones post like them.
I just back up the new ones and still got hammered for it.
So I just will not help anyone there now.

I enjoy posting up and get information on my shots as some times I am a little too quick to post.
I should look at them more, as a few times these silly mistakes that I failed to see are posted.
But the learning is the part I think more should look at.
And yes take in what you think is right for you and say thank you for their points of view.

Would you post links to some of the forums of which you speak?
I would like to take a look for myself!

Well I'm flabbergasted, other countries have photography forums as well as America, that's incredible. Believe it or not we even have a couple in the UK.

I do not understand what you are flabbergasted about. Of course other countries have photography forums. In fact, Finland has an excellent photography forum that you and I are participating in at this very moment!

Here is something else that might flabbergast you:
I have never heard of an "American photography forum".

I have just heard of, and visited, photography forums. I have never heard of them being limited to, or identified with, those who live in a given geographical region.
In other words, Finland has a great photography forum, but it is not necessarily a "Finnish photography forum".

All of the photography forums with which I am familiar are worldwide forums, with respect to who is permitted to join and participate.
Never once have I come across a photography forum that was specific to the United States, although two of the forums I frequent are owned and run by people who live in the U.S.

But, you speak of the forums you're involved with as "Australian forums", so it seems as though they are in some way specific to Australia.
Nevertheless, I would appreciate it if you could post a link to those forums of which you speak; I would like to see the snooty behavior that is there.

That link on the top has got quite a lot of the forums here in Australia.
And then you have other people with their views on who is who or what it what.
So that this way you are getting the opinions of others and maybe not my one sided opinion.

This photography forum for example is not an American forum. Your in Finland good sir.

Each year, there seems to be a marked increase in lack of common courtesy and respect. This forum is moderated very well, and is one of the most friendly and helpful out there, despite a few heated threads here and there where members butt heads, but in the end, we all get along.

Just spend most your time here, perhaps just a bit less than I do (or should), otherwise you might have an addiction.

I have to admit to thinking this was an American one, but now it has been pointed out to me where it is based.
I have to start by saying I like this place and it is taking a little time to get use to where to post but I am getting a little more intouch with it now.
I know this is a nice place to hang my hat and this mean and I am sorry but you have to get use to me as I ain't going anywhere now.
Well done on the way this is run and I have to say thanks to all people making comment as no one has even tried to talk down to me because of my lack of knowledge in some area's.
Yes you Admins and Mods here along with the great mob of people here have made it a very good place to be.
And my Australian forum will not see another reply in them in any manner now.
Big pat on the back to you all here.

Wow! That "Whirlpool" photography forum is a mess! There appears to be little to no organizational structure, in the form of well-categorized sub-forums. No categories. No differentiation between the photo-sharing sub-forums and the discussion sub-forums. Just a few stickies at the top and then a huge list of miscellaneous threads all lumped together. No wonder the folks there have their panties in a bunch!

If people take a look at some of these other forums that are out there, they will realize how spoiled we are here at POTN.

I think with forums you have to tow the company line and if you and me do this it runs like a well oiled machine.
But this is where the line in the sand is drawn.
Now for me to rubbish anything Australian is very big even if I say so myself.
I love my country but this doesn't mean I have to agree with all that happens here.
And this forum mess that is run by as I can see people who have very limited gifts of talking to real people.
They have little to no real skills in running a forum.
If I started one which I think is easy I would be just adding to the ever increasing fools of the forums runners.

There are forums in other form that run like this and they are good.
But, say if it is a car forum, well you have got a limited amount of things to say.
Though a photography forum you can add to it with each shot you take.
Get a comment and it just balloons from there, while a car one to me this is, I feel there isn't too far for you to go.
I have used car ones to find out what I need to do but then don't go back.
But here you start and you just gotta came back to see the new shots and learn from the way it has be posted up.
So yes I will be here for a long time.
