I'd like to mount a second camera on a tripod without taking another tripod. I have a 055XproB with a star tracker on the top and I'd like to have a camera doing wide angle without tracking at the same time.
It looks like a Manfrotto Superclamp would do the trick but I've never seen one in the flesh so I'm not sure. Can I attach a ballhead to one and get a rigid connection ? Is there a better option ?

Steve.

You can attach a ballhead to the superclamp (with a spigot screwed in) but I'm not sure if it will give you enough flexibility in manoeuvring the camera or clearance from the tripod leg. The addition of the Manfrotto snake arm with camera bracket would give you a lot of options in positioning of the second camera as you can offset it from the tripod. I have all these items so could take photos for you if it would help.

Manfrotto super clamp and magic arm will work. The Super clamp has a 1/4" female and the arm can have a 1/4" male on both ends.

I wouldn't use it to mount a heavy lens, though.

seems like a great way to introduce vibrations/movement to the camera on the tracker.

I agree with that thought. It's not something I would do.

Thanks.
The reversible short stud was the bit that I hadn't seen. That makes all the difference.

I don't think the magic arm will be required and without that, I expect the camera on the leg is going to be more rigid than the one on the tracker.
I'll test it and see. That's not too big of a problem anyway, as I don't need to be exposing both cameras at the same time.

I'm open to any other suggestions.

Steve.

A Manfrotto 131 DDB would do the trick nicely for about $125.00 and is more stable than a Magic Arm.
