Hope you're right, but Canon Rumors is saying the opposite...85 will cost more (scroll to bottom to see prices in yen):

Those are MSRPs in yen, so the actual retail price remains to be seen.

This 85mm needs to be priced right to compete considering the third-party nature and the pricing of the Sigma 1.4 and the Canon 1.8 lenses are rather competitive.

I didn't post that link to show prices, just to show that CR is reporting that the 85mm is being priced relatively higher than the 90mm. The price indeed remains to be seen, but those expecting the 85mm to be less than $650 - less than the known price of the 90mm - may be disappointed.

I'd rather keep my old 85mm f1.8 then buy a Tamron. Even if it has a Image Stablization. Seriously I never understand the need for IS on a lens you basically use wide open in the first place. Seems just like a gimick to me.

Yeah, I think Tamron's in a tight spot between Canon and Sigma, tbh. The macro, I'm sure will do well, but the 1.8 primes with IS and third-party focus...not sure how well those will do when I'm sure there are tons of people like you who are fine with the Canon. It would have to be much better at CA and sharpness wide open, and even then, I think it'll be a tough large-scale sale. Good that they finally have a Tamron dock, but that's not going to necessarily be a perfect solution. We'll have to wait on reports of autofocus, but I don't have my fingers crossed on that end.

This is a wedding event lens pure and simple - the IS allows you to use similar SS that you can with the 70-200 IS lenses. If it is tack sharp across the face, add a higher mpix camera (5DSR, 810, new 5D4?) and you will have cropping ability to lose that heavy zoom. And it gets weather sealing which you need / want on event lenses - and F1.8 beats F2.8 on the wedding zooms all day long.

85mm is not a big seller from a FL perspective but I think it will do well.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

IS makes sense on a telephoto, put this on a crop and now you have the issues many have with the 135L.

im curious to see how this lens performs. the canon 85/1.8 is no slouch, the AF is up there with canons speediest and its very sharp, even wide open. im more interested in how this lens renders oof areas, as that my desire for the 85L. im disappointed this is only 1.8 and not 1.4 but that keeps the cost and weight down. i'm a big fan of the 24-70/2.8 so i have high expectation for this lens.

I like you am more interested in how it renders than AF speed, VC ability, or sharpness. I am glad it is 1.8 as I don't need the extra speed, but would welcome the cost savings.

Overall, if F1.8 works for you, I think the new Tamron has good potential

Like Wallstreetoneil, I'd +1 a look at the Sony / Metabones path, looking doesn't cost....
There are some very nice manual lenses in the 85/90 mm FL. I'm not sure what you shoot, obviously the MF path and sports isn't a great fit I now shoot an A7ii, having migrated across from 6D. I have a handful of Zeiss Contax lenses and a handful of canon L glass. All my lenses are now IS....I prefer to manually focus, especially with focus magnify assist allowing me to critically focus anywhere in the frame. I also now love electronic viewfinders, wysiwyg... the rendering and colour of the Contax lenses is just sublime. They are also generally significantly smaller and often lighter (& cheaper..) than the canon counterparts. My favourite happens to be the Contax 85 2.8, it's small, but it packs a punch, from wide open, and the images do have that look that you elude to re 135L. Other options include the Leica R Summicron or Elmarit 90, again depends on what you're looking for
Apologies if this is way off the mark, but no one else chimed in re MF, and you do get the AF option with in body IS, for eg your 135L on a Sony/Metabones path.
