Question about Canon 6d AF points

Hello All,

I tried to search this forum regarding my concerns, but couldn't find right answers to it, so I thought to post it here
My questions are,

1)Is there a way you can select multi AF points(out of 11) in your canon 6d, while shooting (like can you have center AF point and four assist points selected next to it)? If so, then can anyone tell me how to configure it?
2)My subjects are kids, but I see my canon 6d doesn't follow the subject after I set the AF .... It doesn't matter if I am in AI focus or AI servo? Is there any configuration to check this out?
Or my camera is faulty? I bought it very recently.
I will appreciate, if anyone can suggest me something on my concerns.

1- No. You can pick certain points but not multiple one individually.
2- Correct, the focus points are set and do not track. You need to move and keep the selected point on the subject. AI Focus or Servo will work. AI Servo is what I would use.

And welcome to POTN. Hang around here a bit, you'll learn a lot very quickly.

I don't believe that the 6D will allow for group/area AF, someone can correct me if I'm wrong I don't have mine with me right now. You either get one point or all 11 unless I'm mistaken. If your using AI servo it wont follow your subject across the frame, but if you keep the focus point you have selected on the subject it should do a decent job of tracking the subject. It takes a little bit of practice but you'll get better at it with time.

One thing you want is to use 'Back button focus' it will make tracking easier.

I think technically the all-11-AF-points mode should track in AI Servo mode, meaning you start with the center point and if the subject moves off the center point, the other AF point(s) take over (whichever is covering the subject.) Now, I say "technically" because it does not work as well in the 6D as in other Canons where most or all the off center points are cross type. Plus there are only 11 AF points so there will be a relatively small area covered and there may even be gaps between the AF points.

Yes this is the way it should work in AI Servo, with all points selected. I shoot a 50D and this is how I shoot with that. I have BBF with focus removed from the shutter button, AI Servo and all points selected. I can use this sa if it were Single Shot just by pressing the focus button, then release the button to lock focus. Since the system isn't at that point tracking it only uses the center AF point. If I have a moving subject then I just hold the button, and it tracks as normal for AI Servo.

I would never use AI Focus, it's rubbish, and can never seem to make up its mind. I used to have to use it all the time with my 300D, as that was the only thing you could select. It pretty much stayed in One Shot mode, I don't think I ever saw it change to AI Servo. All AI Focus is supposed to do is decide if the subject is moving or stationary, and automatically select One Shot or AI Servo, something it seemed incapable of doing.

It seems that there are a handful of accounts where the 7D2 AI Focus setting actually works very well, at least noticeably different than other models. Perhaps Canon has been tweaking that mode a bit?
