Hi guys I'm really new to the world of flash. I will be purchasing 3 new flashes to use while shooting wedding receptions. I've done my research and think that the yn600ex-rt will work best for me. I plan on using one unit on camera and the other two off camera. I use a 5diii and 6d.
My question is "will I be able to use the yn600ex-rt on camera to fire the off camera units or will I need a separate trigger unit? Will my 5d3 and 6d be able to program the flashes on camera since these units are ttl.?
Thanks

Yes the YN 600 ex-rt flash will serve as a master. It will do everything the separate trigger will do.

The only thing to watch would be using the master as a flash off the hotshoe. If you have your slaves on lightstands with the appropriate modifiers, it may be best not to use the light from the hot shoe mounted flash. If you are not going to use the flash for a flash, you may as well use a trigger and save the weight and only use two batteries instead of four.

It should work just fine. I've been doing a lot of reading lately, since I"m still very new to OCF, and I've come a cross a ton of posts and articles where wedding photographers are using a 600 on camera and 2-3 more on stands around the reception.

I have 3 and the STE3. Works great but the STE3 has no AF assist beam. So like in your case one stay stays on the camera while two are off in darker environments. I bounce the on camera flash.

Group mode is awesome. You can set one off camera flash to manual and the other to ETTL all from the master on the cam. I often have the two off camera in M and the on camera one in ETTL. You will love it.

Thanks guys. I think the AF beam would be a big plus for me when shooting in dark receptions.
I think I'll go ahead and order 3 of the 600's and start experimenting in my basement. Using ttl on camera bounce and then manual for the OCF sounds Good lets hope I can figure it all out.
Thanks guys.

The canon version of the st-e3 does NOT have AF assist but the Yongnuo version does. The Yongnuo 600 and Canon 600 lines are largely interchangeable with each other AFAIK but I have read reports of the new 430 EX III not playing nice with YN stuff.

While Yongnuo makes a solid products everything I have read about their version of the transmitter is AF assist beam is pretty much useless. The new 430 RT does not have the traditional spread beam of lights the 600's but uses a spot focus point more dedicated to the centre AF point so you can't move the point around - I think. Someone else can add here.

Did not know about the playing nice part but I'm not surprised. Pretty sure Canon wants us to use all Canon products so might be a little planned crippling going on.
