Hello All,

This is my first post, so I hope I am doing this right!

I would like to buy a Canon MPE-65 lens and would like to know what would be a camera model that would be appropriate for it.

I have no experience with Canon because I only shoot with Nikon. The reason for the MPE-65 is because I want to shoot all the way to 5x without
all the bother of attaching tubes and bellows. This will be a dedicated macro setup so that means the MPE-65 will be bolted on for ever and a day! All my other
shooting will be on the Nikon, obviously.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thx Don Pirhana

Heya,

Depends on the end result of your files and what you do with them.

A $300 APS-C would be totally fine.

It's not like you need high ISO ability.
Do you really need more resolution than 13~18MP?

50D sounds like a good starting point. 70D if you want to take it up a notch.
Otherwise, if you feel the need to full-frame it for some reason, maybe an old 5D2 or 6D.

More importantly will be your selection of flash(es) and diffuser setup, than the camera.

Very best,

Thanks a lot for the info!

I don't need full frame or high ISO. So, I am going to take the advice on getting a 50D or 70D.

I do have rails, so that is covered. I'll look for an appropriate flash.

thx again.

Unless you need TTL, if you have Nikon flashes they should work just fine and actually have optical trigger options that Canons flashes don't.

And a good source of ideas for setup: https://photography-on-the.net …hread.php?t=142566&page=1

Thanks very much.

Yes, I do have Nikon flashes. But I am willing to spend some $$$ on Canons if required.

So, I should be Ok if I pair the MPE-65 with either a 50D or a 70D? What I don't want to do is end up getting "more" camera body than is necessary.

Most cheap Rebels should be fine - but not the SL1, because it only selects even f-stops (I mean, f/11 and f/16, but not f/13 or 14). Also make sure it will do Live View. Even the SL1 will do that.

You might want to consider if you will be doing tethered shooting and if the body can handle that, or having stacking software control the camera.

If you will be shooting outdoors then a flash is pretty well necessary. But if you are focus-stacking pics from an indoor studio, then continuous light will be better, because it gives more consistent exposures from shot to shot.

As far as camera body, either the 50 or the 70 would be fine. The 70D has a newer sensor and better AF and the 50D lacks the articulating screen. I'm not 100% sure on the flash commander if you were to invest in canon flashes, but as a canon guy if I were to go back and do speedlites again, I'd go Nikon with the canon body.
T5i is the older sensor, but it's APS-C with articulating screen, shut a little weaker AF than the 70D

MP-E 65mm is a manual only lens.

I'd go with the 70D simply because the light meter is that model is really good.

I wouldn't go with a 50D, because of the lack of swivel- you could go 60D, or one of the rebels with one

Thanks to all who replied above.

I absolutely need an articulated screen. On my D700 I end up attaching and unattaching a right angle viewer... major pain!

So it is the D60 or D70, then. Thanks again

Right but in explaining the difference between cost between cameras it was more than just the sensor, don't need to pay that extra for it if you'll only ever use the 65 and the sensors may not be as far apart as the price gap makes them seem.

Also long term planning it's potentially useful should the OP (or someone coming to this thread later) ever decide to down the road pick up the EF-S 60, 100, 100L or 180L (as well as the MP-E 65).

I was keeping the discussion within the confines of shooting macro. AF isn't even a remote consideration where macro is concerned, no matter what lens you're using...

Yes, I have to agree that AF is the least of my concerns when it comes to macro!

I have been looking at the feature set of the 70D and I think this will suit me just fine. I have no interest in full frame and as I have said earlier, this lens and a suitable body will be dedicated to macro. Any other use for the body will necessitate the purchase of lenses and accessories and I am not going down that road, thank you!
