Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS HSM EX on Full Frame

When I left the Canon family and moved over to Nikon in order to go up to full frame (D750) I lamented having to leave behind my 3 favorite lenses (in order of most favored first) - Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS HSM EX, Sigma 18-35 1.8 Art, and my Canon 17-55 2.8 IS. Well since I recently picked up a D7200 as my backup camera (and as a cheap way of extending reach on my Tamron 150-600) I decided I may as well pickup a Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS whenever the opportunity arises since I knew how rare a good used copy was becoming...

So as soon as it arrived this afternoon I took a few quick snaps with the lens mounted on my D750 just to see how bad the vignetting would be and the following pictures are the result. (For those not interested in going further - I was actually shocked at how useful this lens works on a full frame sensor even though it is meant for crop!) All of the pictures below were shot originally in RAW and then minimal processing in Lightroom 5.7 to convert to Jpeg. On the lens corrected jpegs below - note that all I did was put a checkmark in the lens correction portion - I did NOT adjust the effects manually which would likely reduce the vignetting even more on some of these.

***EDIT - After posting I realized that out of sheer habit I had taken all of these photos with the lens hood on! This significantly effects the shape of the vignette!!! - Because of this error I went back and added 4 new photos in POST #8 of this thread with the lens hood removed while in Full Frame mode and in 1.2 Crop mode in camera (Pictures will be forthcoming)

Having shown the full frame and 1.2 crop mode and how it looks last but not least is 1.5 crop mode. I will post those below in similar order.

So my closing thoughts. If you are a crop sensor shooter and it might be a few years before you move up to full frame or don't plan on moving up. This lens is a gem and especially with Nikon if you do move up to full frame it is still usable versus when I was on Canon it became a little less usable

Without the crop factor it is bad, I useable in my opinion. I really wish they made a 50-150 2.8 for full frame. That would be a fantastic focal length.

Yes the vignetting is pretty noticeable at full frame, and when I closed down to F11 you could see the hard edged outline - it vignetted less but you could see the solid outline at that point. But this is where it becomes personal decision though! I could shoot and frame in full frame mode and crop out the vignette in post or use the lens effects to clean it up further and it would give me similar size files and quality as if I set the camera into one of it's crop modes.

That said if I was to use this lens on my full frame I would definitely put it into 1.2 crop mode and shoot from there. It would reduce the amount of post processing I would need to do. It is a unique range to work in for full frame and a great range for crop cameras when you convert the field of view (In 1.5 mode it is a fov similar to 75-225mm and in 1.2 mode it is fov similar to 60-180mm on full frame)

Just thought it would be interesting to post up these pictures of one of my favorite crop lenses (I know someone had done it in the past but the image links seem to be broken in that post). Also glad to see that nifty in camera crop mode that Nikon offers having a use that I might actually use! (Not likely but it is there if need or opportunity arise!)

No I am glad you did post them up. The 1.2 images are useable by far. And it doesn't extend the FOV out too much. I had never seen this lens used on crop so it was very interesting.

Sorry, tone is hard to convey in text - I took no offense and appreciate your thoughts! Stepping back and looking at them you are right the straight full frame shots are barely usable but at the same time I loved seeing the difference in framing between the different crop modes. I almost wish I had set the camera to manual and not aperture priority. Just glad I had thought enough to stay put in one spot while changing the modes lol

OK, so removing the lens hood does make the vignetting slightly more palatable but still meh. Wish I would have paid attention to that factor but I guess lens hood habits are second nature at this point!

Looks like another case of a great crop lens looking very useable on FX. Thanks for the comparisons
