I have seen a lot of photographs with the soft (misty) water effect, and I would love to be able to capture it like a pro ;) . Currently I own a S2IS and I have shot a few images containing this effect none rally to the standard I would have liked :( . I have checked some previous threads and they offered me some help but I cant spare any cash for filters ‘n such so… I gave up. Now I’m looking forward to getting an EOS 350D in the next month or so and I was wondering to what level I could achieve this effect on this camera, is it any easier? also being still new to the concept of filters will they still be needed?

- Thanks for any help :)

From what it sounds like you're trying to do, you need to use a long shutter speed, ie many seconds. Depending on the light, you will probably need to use some ND filters, or a polorizer, or both, to block some of the light to give you a proper exposure

Yeah, to acheive the effect you are looking for, in my experience you are looking for a shutter speed longer than 1/8th from my experience. Just play around with it, you'll find that works for you. And every body of water is different, and each shutter speed has its own little effects.

Personally I like speeds in the 1 second to 1/10 range, it gives a stringy look to the water, but also gives it that fluffy cotton ball look.

Just experiment with it, you'll get it. ;)

High f-stops (8, 11, 14+) will help you to slow the shutter down. Overcast days are your friend. ;)

Just to give you an idea:

This is 1/6 shutter speed:

This is 1/3 (twice as long as 1/6):

I'm no pro, but I assume it varies from one body of water to another, so finding that "sweet spot" will take some experimenting from you. But for the most part 1/2 shutter speed and longer is going to be a good starting point IMO, depending on the look you want.
