As I have to do the cable management first , they will be connected anyway.
Can I just undo the Sata data connector, and leave the Sata power connector in the SSD; or will this cause me problems.
Similarly for a normal 7,200rpm WD HDD - can I leave it powered without the Sata Data connector ?

Any ideas?

I have also bought an Asus PCIe to M.2 aic . Can I leave that in without the Samsung 950 Pro M.2 drive attached - when I do the first boot. I.e. So The only connected drive is the Intel 750.
I am hoping the OS and or Bios will just see an empty PCIe Slot or maybe think its an empty M.2 - NVMe slot?

Or would you recomend removing the Asus Hyper Mini x4 Adapter Card as well.

Basically trying to minimise the number of times things are plugged in and out.

Is your OS installed on the Intel 750? If so, you shouldn't have any problems with just disconnecting other drives. Why leave them connected via power if you're going to remove their data connection though?

Also, I don't think Windows will have a problem with an empty M.2 add in card. You should be able to leave that connected to the motherboard with no drive without a problem.

Leave everything unplugged, just in case.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Hi
No its a new build no OS yet installed. Thats W10 Home 64bit on a USB stick retail pack job.
Any old data is on an external portable WD USB 3.0 passport

My desire to leave the Sata power connector on is they are an exceedingly tight fit from the new EVGA 1200 w P2 - I mean so tight I am scared the connector on the Samsung 850 Evos might break. And yes they are fitted the right way round.
I also have horrible Sata 3x connectors daisy chained so a real pain bending the spare connecters out of sight. I cant get new ones as EVGA have aproprietry fitting on the PSU side and dont make 1 to one connectors.

Hence just pulling the Sata data cable would be so much easier.

Thanks for your thoughts on the PCIe M.2 adapter card.

Yeah no such thing as a a "true shortcut"

Not having much luck, new HP 4K screen arrived. They lied its not got a glass screen according the the tech support guy at HP Monitor support. ( easy cleaning was a biggy for me ) and the left side of the glass screen was loose!
Organised a replacement, and sod me this one wont rotate into protrait mode! It is supposed to swivel really effectively - and can " apparently be twisted as much as you want" - only this one wont move more than 5 mm. The other one did. So another return!
Boy do I hate crappy QC!

Wish all the companys were like Noctua, beautifully built PERFECT!!!!

Oh well scary days tomorrow .... Thermal paste!!!! :-/
THen see if it goes up in smoke when I power up lol.

Positive point managed to extend the 120mm fan rails with 6mm x 25mm Aluminium thanks to a great company called Materials for me. Ordered on Monday arrived cut to size next day.
So I can cover over the right hand side and get rid of those plate access covers with one sheet of polished stainless steel, and hopefully sandwich some sound deadening stuff between. Drill a few holes and move the SSD slide on trays ( like the one holding the samsung on )

:)

You can leave the power connected, the drives can not power up without the data cable telling it to do so.

Thermal paste isn't hard, just don't overdue it. All you need is a little rice/pea sized line or spot then push the cooler onto the CPU and bolt it down.

:-/
Very scary ....
Now I am wondering if I put on too much THermal paste, Noctua say put on a 4-5mm diam pea of paste. As its a Xeon I think that are bigger than i7 cpu I measured as best I could a 4.5mm diam pea and spread that amount a little wider than thicker - sort of oblong shape to suit the shape of the cpu. And squashed the cooler on it as level as possible, and rotated a bit as directed, and bolted it up, a few turns on each side alternatively - hoping to get even pressure as it bolted down.

I was hoping one could see the edge, after finishing the job; and if any TP was coming out at the sides, that I could wipe it off witha Q tip or redo it. But honestly I cant even see the edge of the cooler baseplate. Even with a tiny mirror its impossible, or at least cant see any overspill.

Guess I'll find out, if it floods the cpu socket and goes bang!
