Digital Camera Speed Challenge #405

A Grave Situation

For this challenge, lets see images that convey the feeling of loss, death, gloom, and despair, taken in graveyards or at funerals/wakes. The main object may be a person (or persons) involved (living or dead), a graveyard, tombstone(s), casket(s), and so on. I'll be looking for creativity (including post processing), composition, lighting, and most importantly... the ability to convey the mood.

I'm hoping the subject matter isn't too narrow, and that we can get a decent amount of input. If you know a forum member who has posted these types of shots previously, please invite them!

This challenge begins when posted, and will end at noon. Pacific time, Sunday, February 21st, 2016. Winner of this challenge will be announced shortly thereafter.

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera: Any Digital Camera, but NO Cell Phones.
2. Time: Any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size: Please visit Image Posting Rules.
4. Post Processing: Do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting: ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.
Camera model & lens used. Post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting: No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7.
Keep it clean, and both Family and Work safe.
8.
Have questions, PM me.
9. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - Noon, Pacific Time Sunday, February 21st, 2016.
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

Thanks for the submissions! Not as many as I had hoped, but that's kind of my fault. Maybe not a subject of which too many people have images.

I must delay announcing a winner until tonight, or possibly tomorrow morning; one of the images is hosted by photobucket, which I can't view on my work computer (and I don't leave work until 6PM). But, according to the rules, I won't be taking anymore entries, since it's past noon here.

My apologies.

Okay, I can see them all now. :)

Thanks for participating! I feel unworthy to “judge” other’s photos, but I guess I’ll have to.

Mark: Beautiful silhouette. Love the colors of the sky, but it’s really too pretty for what I’m looking for. Nicely done, though.

Jason: Your image conveys the gloomy mood I’m looking for, but it’s not really tied to graveyards, headstones, and such. Death, yes. Love the concept, and the composition, though. If anything, I would’ve had the bird at more of an angle in the picture, vs straight up and down. But that’s personal preference.

Phil: Interesting poem on the headstone! And it is a headstone, in a graveyard. Composition is lacking, however. You were apparently just trying to record the wording in this one. You succeeded ;)

Groundloop: Can’t say I really get the reference. Maybe I haven’t watched the show enough. It does appear to be the corner of a graveyard, but it doesn’t really do anything for me. Pretty low contrast… done on purpose?

Benitoite: Obviously the right type of location, and you’ve got tombs in there (Vietnamese?). Maybe it’s just the difference in culture, and the brightness of the tombs, but I’m not getting the mood I was looking for. Maybe I was hoping for something more gothic.

Lisa: Very nice image, overall; subject matter, composition, processing. The b&w works. The sunburst over the columns, though, almost gives it a feeling of hope… which is a nice sentiment, but not exactly right for this challenge. Love the tree.

Okay, so I have to choose. What works best for me is scrolling through the images, and going with what, in my gut, gives me most closely what I was looking for.

Lisa, you win again, followed closely by Jason and Mark. Your prize money is in the mail!

Thanks for the nod, Moose. I was debating on whether or not to post that and almost missed the deadline. I got hung up on a project around the house & barely remembered in time.

Mark, I really liked your opening image.

I'll think on a theme tonight & post a new challenge tomorrow. Thanks for this one, Moose. It was kind of a tough one!

Well done Lisa, and excellent submissions from the usual suspects. Thanks Moose for the challenge, and the words.

Yes, I took creative license with your challenge requirements, but that's just me doing my thing. I actually thought long and hard on how I was going to present this composition, because I did have the entire , deceased, crow in frame. In the end, I chose the "less is more" approach.

Thanks again.

I think it definitely worked better than a full crow would have.
