I know they are totally different subjects, but please choose which is the better photo overall. I am doing a beginners photography course and want to know which one to enter into a general photo competiton.

Edited to add: I meant lion, not tiger, in poll above.

Ehm - why don't you tell us the 'criteria' for the competition? It would help.

Other than for a baby photo competition, I would choose the lion.

I think its just best photo in general, ie a combination of composition, sharpness, exposure, impact etc.

I like the tiger...good use of lighting to minimize the stripes.

The baby is cute...great smile, but the lighting is boring which is a killer for a portrait in a competition. But, if it was for a client I'm sure they'd be pleased.

going to show my inexperience here, but what causes that? Lay of the land in the background or too large aperture? I've really never heard anyone talk about a background falling out of focus too suddenly so it'd be good to know what to look for.

Johneric8, now that you mention it, I agree with you. I didnt get too many in focus shots that day and I think it was caused by too small a depth of field. I need to use a smaller aperture with my 70-200 to get more in focus. Thanks for the info!

JaertX, thats interesting about info about the lighting, I'll keep it in mind next time I am shooting her. And like you said, because I am her mother, I was biased and liked it.
