i'm seriously thinking about selling my 5d2 and moving to sony. mainly becuase for in body stabilization and just to get lighter. I ve been looking at the a7 and now the a7ii for sometime and i think its time to move on from canon.

i have a 5d2, Tamron 24-70/2.8, canon 85/1.8 and canon 135L.

i would likely keep the canon lenses for now.

I manly shoot portraits and the occasional wedding. For the most part my setup works for me. I considered selling the 135L since its really hard for me to use without stabilization.

i love the feel of my 5d2 but its just too bulky to drag everywhere so a smaller system is ideal. for the most part i only use it for paid photoshoots and i hate that. I use to drag my camera everywhere and now i dont.

so a few questions, how well will my canon lenses work with the a7ii?
how is the af on the sony compared to my 5d2 for portrait and wedding work? no sports
will my tamron work or should i sell it and get something else? i really only use it for weddings and the occasional landscape.
what about speed lights? will my canon 430ex or Yong nuos work or will i need to look at replacing speed lights?

I went from a 5D2 to the a7 and a7s and haven't looked back since.

Autofocus is not a problem with my "older" a7 bodies. I'd even consider selling your Tamron 24-70 and getting the Sony FE 24-70 F/4 instead. Yes, it's an F/4, but honestly that's moot point in this day and age because ISO limits are so getting higher and higher.

I've shot three weddings last year (primarily a portrait photographer) and found the auto focusing system to be adequate. The bigger limitation on how good the photographs turn out is the photographer's abilities itself.

I use Yongnuo flashes and triggers for my Paul C Buff Einsteins. If you look at my gallery you'll find that all of my photos were taken using the Sony a7 system.

I'd say the a7II will AF Canon lenses as well as your 5D2 will...so not world beating AF, but good enough for most photography. The 85 1.8 and 135L will need the metabones IV to work properly...there might be some cheaper adapters that work with them, but you'll have to research which ones, as not all adapters are compatible with older lenses.

430EX will work...but only as a manual flash. To get TTL you'll need a flash made for sony cameras. I'm using the nissin i40 and its a very good balance of size and power/capability.

i'vegotten so used to Canon that this all just seem daunting. With Canon I know what I want and need, with Sony I have so much to choose from.

The grass is always greener as they say. Canon's lens lineup is awful convenient!

And I'm waiting to see what the AF on the 6DII is... or Sony would be very serious. But man that is a lot of dough for body + metabones. So as I'm also moving on from my 5D2, my 7DII will be the roughing it/main camera and I'll wait to see what the end of the year brings.

But I keep eyeballing the original A7... amazing little camera, and with a small zoom, perfect travel camera. Cheap on ebay.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

im thinking the same. im actually looking at the 5diii. i've rented a 6D for wedding work and while it takes nice pics, its not the 5d2 in terms of the ergonomics or control.

Well going with the 5d3 won't achieve any of your goals you set out in your post, namely IBIS and a lighter kit.

Thankfully the a7II can use PDAD with all of them.

Is the Sony A7RII really that much smaller? I think if your using a zoom or even an L prime I feel the size/weight difference is really not that much. At least that is what's keeping me away. I've considered switching for a while now but I just don't see much of a difference unless your talking the A6300 or Fuji.

Am I missing something?

it's not much smaller, *IF* you're using big lenses.

If you're mounting larger lenses frequently, then it's not that much smaller, however the body profile will allow you to fit the body into much smaller bags. To get an idea of how small it can be, I typically use the A7rii with 55mm f1.8 or A7r with 40mm f1.4. Like a restaurant outing or to the mall, I'll just carry the A7r/rii and 40mm f1.4. I have a tiny belt clip bag that fits the whole combo, or bigger shoulder bag that can fit 2 or 3 small lenses.

the bulk difference in body alone is pretty massive

the bulk and size savings is two fold.

1. Body size, significantly smaller

2. *Some* lenses. Forget about the GM lenses if you want small. This is where things arent straight forward, and a case by case basis.

  • Voigtlander lenses soon to be native 10mm, 12mm, 15mm. The 15mm will carry the same design from the leica mount. It's a tiny lens. The 10 and 12, new designs, so who knows. I have the older M mount 12mm, works great on the A7rii, wont work well on any other model. Legit small lens.
  • Loxia 21mm f2.8, much smaller than ZE 21mm f2.8
  • Batis 25mm f2, moderate size, much smaller than ZE 25mm f2 equivalent, much smaller than EF 1.4 glass, however cant be compared directly
  • Sony 28mm f2, small
  • Sony zeiss 35mm f2.8, small
  • Loxia 35mm f2, small
  • Loxia 50mm f2, small
  • Sony zeiss 55mm f1.8, small
  • Batis 85mm f1.8, moderate size, a little smaller than an adapted 85mm f1.8
  • Sony 28-70, moderate size, no weight to the lens, feels hollow
  • Sony zeiss 24-70mm f4, moderate size
  • M-Mount lenses. These require research, some may not work well, others will. Many options.
  • All the rest of the MF lenses. You can find many unique glass that wont work so well on typical EF system, but very well on sony. Some notable lenses: OM 200mm f5, nikon 105 AIS, FD collection

---------------

aside from the size, you're also buying into the tech tools not offered by DSLR's, like face detection, AF coverage, realtime exposure, peaking in viewfinder, adaptability, eye focus (native lenses), IBIS for all lenses

When will the Voigtlander 10, 12 and 15 be out? These will not need an adaptor to work on the A7RII? A friend of mine has it with the V15

supposedly spring this year, and they will be E-mount, no adapter needed. The current 12 and 15mm are quite tiny, 15 has better IQ, but 12 isnt too shabby, but a TON wider. I cant really judge the 10mm, widest I've tried was the canon 11-24, and that had some focus breathing, at infinity, it's wider than the cv 12, but closer distances, the cv 12 was wider. Really fun lenses that you can bring without worrying about size. Just stack the lens into your lens bag.

i'd be very interested in the 15 but still if you put a pancake lens on a Canon body it would still be pretty small. I almost got the Voightlander 20 but I ended up changing my mine. I personally don't mine the size of Canon primes, I love the quality.

I was all set to get a Fuji camera but I ended up getting a 7D2 and 24-70 F4. I'm still very curious to try out fuji but so many seem to like Sony its hard not to look.

I have used the canon 40mm pancake on the A7rii, with adapter, it's about the size of the fantastic sony with FE 55 f1.8, f2.8 vs f1.8 is why I would shy away. The CV 40 is smaller than both by quite a bit. The sony system is honestly very expensive and enjoyable as well, it would be hard for me to recommend to casual shooters, however if working with a bigger budget, the camera of the future is here. A LOT to like about the camera.

If you have a bit of patience, the sony system is progressing fast, like light speed compared to canikon. There's an adapter in the works that will get you AF on M mount glass, EF adapter is obvious, F mount should be available, contax mount as well. Lots of interesting lenses in M mount, however very expensive. The whole system seems to be growing at a fast pace, which is great.
