Rebel XT ISO Setting in Automatic Mode

Hi,

I have a question regarding the default ISO setting for my Rebel XT.

I have taken over 4,000 pictures in the automatic mode with my Rebel XT. Better then 99% of these default to ISO=400. Only in very bright sunlight do I see ISO=200 or less.

My question is this "normal?"

I have no issues with IQ, I have used a variety of lenses and almost always the ISO=400.

I would appreciate any input on this question.

I'm thinking pretty much so but I don't use the Auto Mode.

The camera makes a judgement on which setting to make and includes apperture value, shutter value and ISO. It should be noted that in Auto mode the ISO setting range is from 100 to 400 (p.55 manual). Maybe the camera starts with the ISO setting at 400 and does not alter it unless neccessary to obtain a good quality image. The manual gives no hint. Maybe 400 is considered a good all round ISO.

If you use the auto mode it goes with the most reliable speed iso most of the time. My advice if you dont like iso 400..start using the Program Mode, its pretty easy to use and you can control everything.

Thanks for the responses...the user's manual is less than clear on default ISO settings. As I continue to gain experience I will use the "P" and "Av" modes more often and set the ISO myself.

The Rebel XT is a super camera and I have made some outstanding photos with it...it will serve me well for years to come
