I agree no 4K is a poor choice esp when your competition is the a6300.

Is 4k really important? I am a tech enthusiast, but I don't have a single 4k panel in the home. I have 3 LCD tvs in the house and 14 displays(including family tablets, laptops & phones). Short of someone buying midrange 4k tvs from Costco, how they watching 4k content?

Get with the program :p

actually, youtube has some 4K content, and it's a camera, you make your own content! It's extremely important if you're competitors are using 4K and your next upgrade cycle is 4 years away! I have two camera bodies, was shooting and doing video with both. Basically 4K content looked noticeably better than 1080 content.

it's like raw files, keeping them around is somewhat future proofing. I want future proof videos, not videos that are a generation behind. Would you buy a 480p camcorder? of course not, because 1080 was much better.... well 4K is that much better than 1080p. 8K would be the next step up from 4K, but we're really far from that, most cameras dont even output that resolution.

At the distance I sit from our main TV and its size that I am limited to because it's in a custom cabinet, I have a hard time telling 720p and 1080P apart. I did some number crunching based on assumptions about 4K I got from reading an article I came across at the time and I would need a 120" tv assuming 20/20 vision to be able to tell the difference.

So I think it's kind of pointless but if I were a company trying to make a sale over my competitors, I would at least offer a product with specs at least as good as the competition or offer it comparitively cheaper.

I don't care about video.
Looks good to me, 45 point AF, 7 FPS, Intelligent viewfinder and customisation.

Most of the videos I actually do shoot are in SD format. I usually need to email them, so I have to reduce them further anyway. So why fill up the memory card with quality not used?

I'm thinking the same too. Lots of AF points (all cross type), 27 of which will work at f/8, and (I assume just the centre point) down to -3EV. In terms of cross type points, number of f/8 points, and low light AF that's (on paper) better than the 5D3 and 1Dx.

From a purely selfish point of view (because I have an eye on the potential 5D4) that further bodes well for it having most of the 1Dx II AF system (otherwise it'll look worse on paper in some areas than this new 80D).

Let's hope this new sensor also shows signs of the DR improvements being seen on the 1Dx II.

From a purely marketing perspective that would be like shooting both feet of the 7DmkII. I imagine the new BSI sensors will arrive in 1D, 5D and 6D bodies first. I might be wrong of course.

Yes and no. The 7DII is primarily a sports/action/wildlife camera; where you could argue that low ISO DR is not quite so critical (compared to a general purpose or landscape/architecture body). Anyway, the apparent DR of the 1DxII shoots the relatively recent 5Ds in the feet (which would need it much more).

Indeed the AF specs (on paper at least) of the 80D are arguably better in many ways than the existing 5D3 (so it shoots that too). For f/8 points, it beats all but the 1Dx II.

If Canon have cracked their DR issues, then it would make sense to roll the new tech out across the board. Personally I'm hoping it will show similar DR improvements.

In the 1960's, GM worked hard to make sure Chevy didn't compete too well against Buick and Oldsmobile. Then real competition from foreign car companies arrived in the 1970-s-1980's and they nearly went out of business.

In 2008 there were signs that Canon also learned this important lesson....that the competitor of the 1D Mark III was not the 5D. It was something that said 'Nikon' on the front. It will be interesting to see if this lesson has stuck or not.
