Vertical for me, because the fence is less obvious.

Very best,

Vertical for me because of that tree.

I'd say vertical.

.

I would like to see the EXIF information for this shot.
What I would especially like to see are what lens was used, what focal length (if a zoom lens), whether or not a tele-extender was used, and what aperture the photo was shot at.
My preference as to "vertical or horizontal" will be based in part on the answers to these questions.

Horizontal for me, because in the vertical shot, the rear end feels like it is cut off.

Ok, but what was the focal length range of the zoom lens? What does it "go up to", in terms of millimeters? Was it a 70-200mm, or something else?

it was 50-135mm. Kind of a bummer isn't it? The Tokina is no longer in production.

I like the vertical better, too much empty space at the rear in the horizontal

What a cool lens - I'd actually never heard of it before. A 50-135 constant f2.8 would be quite useful.

Anyway, the reason I asked was this; if the vertical composition is preferred, then it may have been preferable to shoot a vertical version, rather than just shooting a horizontal version and then taking a crop from it.
The reason is that, given the gear you had, a vertical image could have been shot tighter than the horizontal - at 135mm instead of 90mm. This would have allowed you to more effectively blur out the background elements, which would have all but eliminated the fence, and also would have blurred the left tree trunk a little, which would place a bit more emphasis on the leopard itself. At least you had the millimeters to work with, so you could have shot it that way if you had wanted to do so. Zooms are great, aint they?!!!
