Hrm,

More interesting is that the data shows that frankly it doesn't matter what camera you have, it's just whatever you have with you. The moment captured is far more critical. Look at the fact that a GoPro and slow 645Z were present, two very opposite spectrum things (one auto ultrawide video, one slow as heck larger format, not what you'd expect in the battle fields, etc).

The winning image sort of says it all. Doesn't matter that it's a dSLR or anything. Just matters that the photographer was there to capture it with a camera. That image isn't something you could stand back and proclaim it didn't just come from any one of those cameras listed. There's nothing to it from a technical stand point. It's all about just the composition and story it's telling. That blurry, grainy image tells a really great story and is provocative. Technically nothing to it, again, as any of those cameras could have captured that moment (that could easily have been a still yanked from HD video from anyone of these too). Awesome image. But again, you can't tell it was a dSLR, let alone a Canon, or anything. Frankly, without knowing, that could have been the GoPro with a little processing.

Photojournalism isn't about technicality though, it's about capturing the moment. These sort of articles just show that the camera doesn't matter in this kind of situation very much as long as it's relatively modern. Most of these guys are using the smallest format JPG they can so that they can upload from the field quickly via satellite and other methods that are slow, as they send tons of photos. The images are not expected to be highest quality. It's all about the moment and capturing an idea, story or emotion.

Very best,

My first post was /s btw.

Well, yes and no. DSLR's remain the bulk of photojournalists' tools for practical reasons. We're not keen on changing our batteries six times since historic moments can happen in that time.
