This was a small part of a huge flock(?) of American Coots at Merritt Island a few years ago. There were thousands of them, it was amazing.

Ed these are awesome.
Rather mind blowing too for one used to a mere handful of birds, to see such huge numbers. (well apart from Starlings!)
I love these all crowding onto one tree. Really beautiful birds.
All very nice

Thanks Richard. These huge groups of boat tailed grackles (second pic-second post) are not rare around here. Like in the photo they occasionally gather in huge numbers in the trees on my street and work their way around the neighborhood. The noise is incredible. Sometimes there re other birds mixed in. I don't have any pics handy (they're somehwere) but after a rainstorm or a lot of lawn mowing (or both, preferably) we also get huge flocks, in the hundreds, of white ibis in our neighborhood digging in the wet, fresh-cut grass for grubs and worms. They cover my lawn like snow!

The photo of the coots from a few years ago was the only time I've ever seen such numbers, in the thousands, on the water. It was incredible.

The swallow tailed kites aggregation happens every summer on a lake in Central Florida. Usually about 800-1200 birds, they gather and fatten up so they can migrate to South America. They are leaving now, I saw them last weekend and you could tell they were restless and ready to fly. The trees were full of them and it's hard to capture in an image. I've been told by a state biologist that raptor aggregations like this are rare and this is one of the few species that does this.

My trip to see them last weekend resulted in zero photos, unfortunately. The pics I posted are from previous years' trips.

Thanks Ed for your detailed response. Interesting.
another phenomena uncommon here is that mass migration. I didn't really appreciate or grasp the enormity of it until I saw photos and conversations on here.

Yes I can appreciate those raptors would be something.

I thought more since my comment and we do have occasional large flocks of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos and Cattle Egrets visit, so I correct my last dodgy statement :-(

I would LOVE to see a large flock of sulphurs. That would be mindblowing for me. (I am a parrot guy. I also used to have a lesser sulphur as a pet) We also have lots of cattle egrets here but I have not seen a large number of them at once except at rookeries and they are usually mixed in with other similar birds at the rookeries.

BTW One of my friends of many years is a well known avian veterinarian that was based in the Oakland, California area for decades, and in the early 2000's he relocated to Tasmania!
