Random question, how much do you think would be reasonable for an ad agency license a photo for usage in an ad campaign to visit a major city?

I have only licensed a few so I am definitely not an expert but a lot of factors can determine the price. Electronic ad, print ads, how many copies will be printed, advertising duration, front cover, placed inside magazine, regional or worldwide. Do you license it Royalty Free or Rights Managed. The uniqueness of the image. I think it is really hard to really know without details. It could be as low as $10 to several thousand.

I had a surprise request to license one of my photos and it's enough to add a 5D III to my bag. I'm pretty happy about it.

Price varies by photographer.

From what I've seen the more successful ones base it on other factors such as a percentage of the total ad buy.
Others throw numbers out. Most times a small number (usually amateurs), other times a larger number.

A month old thread, but hopefully this will still be useful for others reading.

It does vary considerably. A percentage of the ad/media buy seems to be a thing of the past for many agencies. I find it harder and harder to go that route these days, and they are rarely sharing those figures now. Using something like FotoQuote can give you a very good idea to start with, as its based on usage which correlates loosely with ad buy, and adjust from there based on experience.

Now that I've been paid, I'll share more about the photo, I was skeptical about this request because I don't take photos professionally, they just reached out to me on Flickr.

Anyhow, this is the photo.

Although the one that initiated the discussion was another older edit that I accidentally deleted from Flickr somehow (lightroom does crazy things like that sometimes).

Anyhow, I asked them a bunch of questions about how many prints they wanted to use it for and what they customarily paid for the usage they were going to use it for. They said between $2200 and $2500, and since this isn't how I make my living I was very happy with that. When they asked about the final price to make their deadlines, I just told them $2500 and they agreed without any questions.

Anyhow, I have also requested copies of the ads but I have not got any yet, so if you're in the Denver area and have seen my photo, let me know! It was a pleasant surprise for the license request. I did a search on Flickr for Denver skylines and this location seems to be pretty unique, I have other photos of Denver but there are like a million of the same location.
