My church is interested in having one of my images printed and they would like it on canvas. It is a square stained glass window but since it is in the attic very few see it. They would like the canvas print to be around 55 inches by 55 inches. I have sources that I have used for smaller canvas prints, but none of them print this large. I have found several possible sources online, but have no idea of the quality of them when making this sized print.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jerry

I've had excellent results from CG Pro Prints. Their largest standard size is 32"x48" but they may have the capacity to meet your needs.

AXGeorge,

Thanks for the reply. I did contact them, but they don't go above their standard size.

My church just had a couple of canvas prints made at Costco. They go up to 40 x 60. They are not the best canvas prints I've ever seen, the surface is a bit flatter and more glossy than I've seen, but they look sharp and the colors are good.

Grouping is another option. Depending on details of the window a 2x2 grouping of 30 inch squares could be downright spectacular.

I know you are asking about a print on canvas, but for an image of a stain glass window, which I guess is back lit, canvas would be the very last print medium I would chose/suggest.

I would be suggesting things like prints under acrylic on a metalic finish paper as producing a nuch better result. A product that brings out the saturation and vibrance of the original coloured glass.

Generally canvas has very low vibrance and saturation, the opposite to what you would expect for the subject matter. I will though admit the last time I shot stained glass it was on Kodachrome 25. The projected slides were very nice to look at though.

This is a great point that Alan brings up. Typically, images look best when printed on a medium that is similar to the subject matter, inasmuch as texture is concerned. Photos of soft things normally look best when printed on canvas, while photos of hard reflective things usually look best when printed on smooth, hard, reflective surfaces. Stained glass is about as hard and reflective as it gets.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Thanks for the advice on not printing on canvas. I will pass this along to the pastor. I have had a few smaller prints made on canvas, but nothing this large. It was his idea to go with the canvas.

Thanks again to everyone.

If you haven't seen some of the many options available these days it can be really easy to fall into the trap of asking for an inapropriate product. I was lucky a while ago to pick up a sample box from a lab called Whitewall.com. it has little 4" square samples of a whole range of products, different papers as well as canvas, acrylics and prints directly on aluminium sheet. What was best was that it was free.

I find it really helps to get an idea of what the best product for any situation would be, and once you have an idea of what product would work best finding the similar product from another vendor is also much easier. I don't do a lot of commercial work, but it was great for one project that I was putting together where the people involved didn't know any better than "canvas" either.
